Oil catch can options for 2019 3.5 L

Anybody recommend an oil catch can and where to purchase?

I see some online but want to hear from those that have actually installed one so I can hear about the pros and cons.

I looked at one but found out I can't install it here in Cali. Hopefully others can chime in.

With the 3.5L being both port and direct-injected will you even see benefit from a catch can?

no sir. It literally is to get rid of blow by caused by forced induction. You don’t need them on a car that doesn’t have it. They look pretty though

Blow by exists on NA. Whole reason for a pcv. Sure we have direct and Port injection, but that doesn't help the backside of the throttle plate/ other areas in the intake stream. I myself have opted for one. After seeing another member that pulled his plenum after <80k, I think it'll be worthwhile

 

I would argue that I am dumping out 1/4" of crud each oil change from my can that would otherwise go in to get burned up but

Not enough to justify an catch can. And these trucks get 500k no issue with no catch can. You are worried about a plenum with oil on it, why? I’m sorry, I’ve been doing this A LONG time. You don’t need one on an NA car. If you did, those cool guys that designed it, would have added one from the factory.

 

They'd also know how to create a proper engine/shifting tune. If only...

 

oh?? Why do you think that? Because an aftermarket is more aggressive? I’m assuming you would do much better lol. Once again, these trucks tend to run for the long haul and you want to tell me the engineers have zero clue what they are doing?

the catch can is like putting an aftermarket intake on your truck because you want a “cold air” intake lol.

 

I think you are missing my point that Toyota is not looking to provide the best truck possible. They are looking to provide a truck that sells and makes them money. The argument that they would exclude a component because it doesn't "help" is not valid. They are removing driver grab handles, inside bed cubbies, even glove box shelves because every $ counts to them.

So yes, the aftermarket tune I purchased is predictable and smoother with the right gear at the right time (thanks @OVTune ) and the catch can DOES collect crude that would either burn OR deposit in my engine. For the cost of the tune I feel and expert has greatly improved my shifting. The truck is improved from OEM but on my dime. Yay me!

 

And you are missing my point. The catch can is not needed. You spent $25 on something that does not increase or decrease the life of the engine. That is a 5oz catch can and you are worried about a 1/4 inch?? What is that??? Ounce and a half every oil change?

End of the day, it’s not my truck, so I don’t care what you do, but I can tell you are confident that you know more than a company that is KNOWN for reliability. You should apply for a job so you can show the engineers why you need a catch can. “Hey you guys, there is a 1/4 inch of oil in here....this is unacceptable and you are not creating the best truck possible”

 

I don't think the catch can will do much for the throttle body or upper plenum. I bet most of that comes from the breather tube right before it? Part 12262. But there are reports of it fixing the smoking so if you have that issue I can see a use for it. Or if you just wanna have one...

 

Meh, I'm a software guy. I am also a content buyer with less crud going into to my engine and a tune that makes my truck enjoyable and predictable to drive. The latter being a clear indication of how engineers are very smart but when restricted (by budget/timeline/costs) they can't produce something better.

Oh and I changed my plugs at 60k just for fun. Can't stop this crazy train!

 

It's the number one selling truck in it's segment. Most owners don't have a catch can or tune. You made yours what you wanted. Get 300k and you'll prove the tune and catch are ok to run. Toyota has proven their model for decades.
