I was driving in the rain 2 days ago and was turning right going uphill, I gave it a little too much gas and my k02s are near bald so I accidentally “drifted” the corner and had to slam on my brakes to prevent a collision. After that my oil light started flashing and my engine started making this bad knocking sound. I pulled over and took a look and could t see anything visibly wrong with the truck. The noise went away for a while and the oil light turned off. But now the knocking sound is back. It is pretty quiet and almost unnoticeable at idle but once I rev to about 1500-2000 rpms, the noise is very loud. It sounds as though it’s coming from near the bottom part of the engine.https://drive.google.com/file/d/1yoj2D9hQYDHMVD2gscsi9HhcPzUIFxCw/view?usp=drivesdk
Here is a link to the video on google drive.
    Please help!

Have you checked the oil level?
The knock doesn’t sound good to me.
Sound like a rod knocking. Hopefully I’m wrong and it is something else.

    It is just money...
Umm. That sounds like a bad day to me. How's your oil level?

I would tow it to your shop of choice.

I also last week replaced the valve cover gasket and spark plugs. However, it was running perfect before this so I’m not sure it had anything to do with me but you never know.

That's a lot of miles. Good news is drive it till it lets go, bad news is get ready for a engine makeover . Just my opinion but sounds like a rod knock. A few moments of oil starvation on a engine with 30,000 miles is a lot different than oil starvation with 200,000 miles. Drifting around a corner, and then slamming on the brakes cleared the oil pan I imagine for a few seconds.....just my opinion. Centrifugal force on oil in a pan is crazy right?

So is there anything I’m able to do? I lost my job cause of the corona virus situation and can’t exactly afford an engine makeover. I do however have time on my hands.

If you know someone with a stethoscope ($15.00 at Autozone) it might help isolate the sound. Be very careful and be under the truck and listen to several spots on the oil pan. You will be able to here the difference in the rods from one to the other....if you have good ears. I'd add a quart of heavy oil like lucas oil treatment to see if it changes the sound. (don't over fill) Getting the truck up on a lift will enable you to listen to the bottom of the motor. Let us know what you find out.

Lucus oil treatment is not recommended for these motors but in this case, a diag tool. These motors have a VVT (variable valve timing solenoids) I think and is run off the oil. If you change the viscosity you might have some problems over time.

Thank you for all your help! I’m going to do some more research on it for sure and give it a good listening. If anyone else has knowledge on this don’t be shy to time in and give your .02. Hopefully I can get this figured out. Once again thank you!

I talked to a family friend who is an Audi mechanic, not ideal but a mechanic is a mechanic, and he said that it could be my oil pressure switch. I’m curious if it’s possible this is the problem and if that would cause knocking? Sounds too good to be true for my situation but you never know.

If your motor is knocking, no. If there is oil in the pan, and the oil light is on, then yes. A sensor/switch will not make your engine knock.

You could try to send in an oil sample and have them check for high content of metallic particles. May help narrow it down.

So after a load of research and talking to mechanics, i decided to go with a jasper remanufactured engine. It was only about 1k more than a junkyard motor so i went with that for the warranty and peace of mind. Engine comes in and the shop put it in the truck and it isn't running right. They suspected it was a valve spring so they took the new engine out and got a replacement for the replacement. I got my truck back today after 2 weeks at the shop and was ecstatic to say the least. Then i tried to turn on the ac a few hours later.... no cold air. Just as i thought the headache was over FML
