    Hello all,

I finally got off the couch today to start working on the truck to fix the four wheel drive and have one quick question

Is the 2004 Toyota Tacoma ADD have a vacuum hose or does it not use one?

From the picture I have, it has one but I’ve heard these models don’t “need” them and wanted to confirm this. Here are some photos I took

I think that is a vent hose.

I looked in the 2003 FSM (latest I have), and saw this comment. I also thought it would only be a vent, and if there is just the one port, I'd say vent, and the FSM has a mistake, but,...:notsure:. The position and the fact that it has no clamp makes me think only a vent.

BTW, here is the troubleshoot from 2003. It says the actuator can be confirmed "by sound" when applying 12V and it never mentions having the engine running. So, I am thinking no vacuum is required.

So would this cause the 4 wheel drive not to engage if the hose was off or broken?

This is just a guess on my part: I'd say it would not cause it to fail IF it is just a vent. The other vents on the FR/RR diffs are just to prevent pressure build up (when gears are turning) so your seals don't blow out. In this case, a vent may be needed to allow for pressure release when the actuator moves. So, as long as it's not clogged, it would still function as a vent.

    Good luck.

Maybe have a go at this, its instructions for inspecting the actuator.

This guy on TTORA repaired his 2001. He mentions removing the "vent hose".
