Window Tinting and Privacy Glass

Here's some math for window tint.

Window Without Tint = W = 100%
First Layer of Window Tint = X = 35%
Second layer of Window Tint = Y = 35%

Evaluate the following to get Light through First Layer:

(W * X) = (100% * 35%) = (1 * .35) = .35 = 35%

Now, apply the second layer of 35% tint:

(X * Y) = (35% * 35%) = (.35 * .35) = 0.1225

Convert the decimal to a percent by multiplying by 100 = 12.25%

A Tint shop will round that down for you, and just call it 12%

 

Only issue, the windows are 77% from factory so a 35% tint would come out the be 27% net which in most states is illegal anyway since most laws go by metered net. So technically a real 35% tint on our tacos would not pass a 35%net tint law...some officers care, some don't

I was just throwing the math up there so people who want to calc their tint percentages will be able to plug in their numbers to the formula.

 

Other way... Tint is measured in the amount of light it transmits.
5% on 5% is passing 5% of 5%, or 1%.

But in actuality, factory glass typically meters out to about 70%-80%, so that's potentially 5% of 5% of 70%.
5% of 70% is 3.5%, and 5% of 3.5% is 0.18%

Double 5% is effectively black.

As light as 35% seems, you're actually illegal in a 35% state with anything darker than 50%.

But in reality, I've been popped in California (no applied tint forward of the side of the driver's eyes) for 20%, but never for 35%.
I normally go 35% on the front and 5% on the rear sides and back, unless I have a shell, then I leave the back clear.

 

You're a contractor... put down your hammer and go pick up your cell phone and calculator. It's easy

 

I don't get the double 5% statement

 

5% on theoretically clear glass is 5% light transmission.

Layering another 5% on that transmits 5% of the remaining light, and 5% of 5% is 0.25% if I put down my hammer and use my calculator

I use a pencil and paper or a block of wood and math , very rarely a calculator
