2009 srs light on after steering column replacement.

Hey guys I had to replace my steering column and now my srs and limited slip lights are active on my dash. Limited slip seems to go on and off randomly. Like a loose wire. Not sure what happened. I didn’t do anything with the wiring. I’m going to pull the battery as soon as the rain lets up.

You broke the spiral cable. (Clock spring)

 

The only thing I could think that would cause it would be if my kid was in the truck and spun the steering wheel a bunch when the lower steering arm was disconnected. Could that have done it?

 

Did you replace the whole column or just the u-joint?

 

Yes, that would do it

 

I replaced the entire lower steering shaft. It came loose on me while I was driving down the road. Fortunately it was a straightish road and I was able to come to a stop safely. The lower bolt that connects the lower steering column to the steering box somehow became stripped so bad that the lower spindle popped off.

 

I'm thinking you're calling the intermediate shaft the steering column. The steering column is everything between the intermediate shaft and the steering wheel.

You mentioned that the intermediate shaft came loose from the rack. When that happened, the rack turned or you turned the steering wheel or both. Don't blame it on your kid. It was an unfortunate side effect of the failure. All it takes is 1 turn off to wind the spiral cable too tight or bunch it up and break it.
