Show off your 3D printed parts

I just started this print. We'll see in a day if all my lines line up so far, then I can finish the shifter curve, mounting tabs, and start adding features.

 

Curious how this runs out. I dislike the texture on my 2015. I though about sanding it down smooth and painting it or using some vinyl to cover it.

 

I wanted to replace a switch blank the previous owner chewed up putting a switch through:

This is my third ever print (and first taco related item )

You can see where I used a brim to hold it down, I was having problems with adhesion but this caused issues of it's own.

Here it is after sanding to get rid of the brim. I downloaded the blank from castmem on thingiverse (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4441188) and added the SR5 imprint using tinkercad. Seems like I sanded right through the first layer of finish in my impatience but I'm not sure if the lines visible in the lettering are from sloppy cad work or support structure. Oh and also, it's a centre switch and my 06 doesn't have those soo.. Big fail, but promising!

 

It ended up detaching from the supports about 15 hours in. I think I'm going to have to add some solid supports/anchors in various places. It's a little tricky printing something so large that only touches the bed in 2 spots. Finish is looking SMOOTH though.

 

Simple but effective seal driver for spark plug tube seals. Yes I could have used a 32mm socket but I don't own one and this only took about 15 min. to design and slice. Also, the inner "retainer" keeps the driver centered while hammering. I'm currently printing a driver for the rear axle seal, hopefully it works out well. I made a mount for my Baofeng UV-82. Took a few revisions but I'm happy with where it is.

The bottom profile ended up being a pretty close match. Added some ribbing to help the large contoured overhangs stay down better, and started adding features. Still have to add a flashlight pocket, cup holder, and 4th gear lockout once I get the shifter contour modeled.

 

Ok, got most everything I wanted added and started the print. Coin sorter, 2 Baofeng charging docks, larger cup holder, flashlight holder, and 3 Carling switches. Simplify3d says 36 hours, so more likely 48 until I find out if it all fits.

Hey, does anyone here take work for their printers?

I lost access to the 3d printers at work due to the pandemic, and won't be allowed back any time soon. Trying to find options to keep some of my truck projects moving forward... without resorting to buying my own printer!

 

I can run parts whenever. Honestly you're better off just buying a printer. Ender 3 pro is on sale now for $209

Damn, that is tantalizingly affordable. A big online 3d printing company quoted my current project alone at a higher price, just to print!

I don't know much about 3d printers, so Iet me ask an annoying n00b question that probably everyone asks: How much extra would I spend to get this machine up and running to its full capability?

For example, I once bought a mini mill at harbor freight for like $600. But then I quickly found myself spending at least that much more to get all the tooling, fixtures, DROs, etc., all just to be able to use it for general purpose milling.

Do I need anything more than this printer and some filament to get going?

Edit: I will need to print with ABS or something else besides PLA, in case that affects the recommendation.

 

It depends on your needs. How big are your prints, material used, etc. You do end up modding most of these cheap printers, and often many times their initial cost. Me personally, I gave up on my chinese printer and designed my own. It is a hobby. Do not expect Star Trek replicator ease of use.

I would need it to print ABS parts over its full bed area. Is that reasonable to expect out of the box? I have reasonable experience designing parts for 3d printing, but so far have only used machines in the $1-2k range that are maintained by others at my company.

 

no. Large abs prints need an enclosure at minimum. Basically just a box to hold heat in. I have seen some people use a literal cardboard box, but that's sketch in my opinion. Without it you will see cracking and warping. You MIGHT get away with it with PETG.
