Hi, yes taking the 1-1/2" out allows the rack mounting points align with the Tacoma factory roof rack. I may have trimmed both the front section and extension, I can't recall for sure. It fits great once trimmed, however it no longer fits our Subaru Outback's roof rack.

Thanks! I'm going to give this solution a shot as well.

    Hey Guys,
Wondering if anyone has found a good solution for a basket on the factory racks. I already have the factory racks installed and Id rather not have to deal with removing them at this point. They came with the truck.
I have a 3rd gen with OEM racks and looking for a basket I can pop on before my next trip in a couple of weeks. I just need it for some a cargo space and easier access to the cooler. I have a cap already and two bike racks one on each end.

    Thank you!20200706_121151.jpg

I got this Maxxhaul mounted up with a little modification to the supplied hardware. The rack was really meant for crossbars closer together than our truck’s but I didn’t want a rack that overhung the bars much, so I made it work. MAXXHAUL 46" x 36" x 4-1/2" - 150 lb. This looks really good. What kind of modification did you require?

I got my OEM roof rack for under $200 new. I would spend a lot of money on a roof rack. Functionally speaking the most weight i would put on the roof would be maybe 100 lbs. No point in a stronger roof rack because all the weight eventually ends up in the OEM threaded inserts.

I've put kayaks, bikes and cargo basket on the OEM bars with no issues. Keep the heavier stuff in/on the bed which also keeps your CG lower and bette gas mileage.

Nothing serious, lot of dremel work on the rear plastic mounting feet. I don’t recall all the specifics but it wasn’t anything outside a shade tree mechanic’s skill set.

Biggest issue is the mounting feet and clamps were meant to fit between the smaller inside bars, but that doesn’t work due to the roof rack bar spacing. So I clamped onto the larger foremost and rearmost bars of the basket, and had to similarly clearance the plastic feet to fit.

Finally settled on a roof basket on the cab. Tyger 57.5”. Nice quality and fits the OEM bars well, just have to miss the fin. Easy install and not too expensive. 5F5CC793-697C-4ADE-9E81-7D74F94AC3AD.jpg2635BAFA-84C6-42AF-B444-626ED6AD4826.jpg

I don't use it that much since I have a full Yakima system on the shell. It is nice when needed, best part is it folds out of the way when not in use (99% of the time) so no annoying wind drone. I mostly used it for a Yakima basket, but have put bikes on it as well.

This photo is before I added the air bags, huge difference when hauling/towing etc...
