do the new trucks not come with exhaust components that are 'corrosion free'
was that the purpose of spraying the muffler?

As with anything prep is key. Best option is to remove the entire exhaust system and prep it thoroughly and paint it.

I used VHT on my 02. I did not remove anything nor did I prep -- just laid under there and got as much as I could. I did follow the manufacturer directions that said to allow it to dry and then bake it by bringing the exhaust to running temps for 15 minutes. It was painted a couple years ago and we had mild winters the past 2 years, so not much brine/salt to test out durability. I'd say I have put close to 40k miles on that truck since I painted the exhaust and its held up fairly well for the half assed prep ( or lack thereof). I did a few minor touch ups here and there, but for the most part it has been protective and it is just aesthetically better looking. Sorry no pictures, but its really nothing special to look at. I'm most likely going to do the same to my 3rd gen as well.
