With enough time and money, anything is possible. What is the goal?

So i looked into a 9" a few months back. I would do that waaaay before an 8.8.the issue you'll run into is the length. You can get a 9", rebuilt it with a posi, and cut the tubes down for around 2,000-2,500$. The driveshaft can be shortened with a different yoke, which is around another 300$. The axles are what are really going to hurt. Moser can custom cut a set, but talking to them it would be stupid expensive. At that point you'd be better off with a 1 off turn key diff for 7-8k from moser.

Ecgs offers a dana swap which will likely be fine i think thats in the 6k range.

Edit: my truck has the maggy blower on it, so its no slouch, even with the armor, and my ecgs rebuilt center section can lay some rubber on 35s and hasn't broke yet *knock on wood*. Not sure what diff the x runners have.

If you are using an axle off another vehicle that you already have sourced, you would need to weld on new spring perches and shock mounts. Then you would need to figure out the driveshaft, brakes and wheels.

Several companies in the US sell axle housings for larger diffs, either as empty housings or fully built. You can get one that is basically a bolt-on setup for you truck with only a driveshaft fitment done. Look at Diamond Axle, East Coast Gear Supply, Dynatrac, or Trail Gear for that.

Another option is a larger Toyota axle such as one from a Land Cruiser, 70, 80, 100 and 200 all have a much bigger rear.

Find an 8.8 out of an Explorer, they come with 31 spline axles already so no need to upgrade. The trac-loc can be upgraded as well, you can run an extra clutch disc, works almost like a locker.
