    @tex.proud has a pretty solid APRS write-up for the d710. I have the pdf he sent me -- it's excellent.

    Yep. If you're using the D-710 and a Mobilinkd TNC 2 with an Android device. It may help you set up a TNC 3 with an Apple device, that's available now. I love the D-710 for APRS. Too bad I sold it a while back...(needed the money). :annoyed:

    Two things to be aware of with cables. My TM-71A has an RJ45 for the base and an RJ22 for the head. I used a 6-pin phone line (RJ11) for the cord, sanded down the two pins on the outside to fit in a 4-pin slot, then crimped an RJ45 on the other end. The RJ22 only has two pins out of the 4 installed, that's why you can't use it. Pretty convoluted. Then the mic cable is a specialty cable with RJ45 ends. The mic lines are shielded separately inside the wire bundle. Some people get a "woodpecker" noise over the line if they extend it with CAT5 cable. I didn't extend it in my setup. The base is under the seat and the mic cable is long enough to come up beside the seat.

    Good luck!

    As @tex.proud wrote up, the TM-D710G has a data-out line so you can hook up a KISS TNC later for APRSDroid if you feel so inclined. Sounds like a good setup.

    @tex.proud Thank you sir! :hattip:

    Uhhhh....o_Oo_O Yeah I guess I am going to have to look at the line to get what you are talking about. There is actually a Gigaparts store front here so I am guessing they can help.

    My thought was put the unit under the seat and then put the HU on an Expedition Essentials 3TPAM. The Mic can sit on a clip right up there. Next to my iPhone too. Build goals LOL

    I went through the same decision process earlier this year for the FTM-400 or D710. Basically, I resolved myself to whichever I could find a quality used radio for the best price and bought a D710 that showed up one morning on QRZ. Before I installed everything I was worried that I made the wrong decision because the FTM-400 color display was very appealing but now that I have a few months use from the D710, I am very glad I stayed wit that unit. The menus, set-up, etc. is very intuitive.

    I have not experimented with any computer interfaces yet, but I would encourage you to include this in your purchase: https://www.gigaparts.com/rt-systems-software-for-tm-d710.html. It helped me program the radio using local repeater lists.

    I'd spend more time using the software than I would just programming it in from the face. D710 is so easy to program a repeater into, the software really isn't necessary unless you are doing a hundred or so and want to keep a backup copy of the programming.

    I like the software for long road trips. I can program a google maps route into it and it automatically programs the repeaters along the route.

    Welcome KF5ZCT!

    There are a lot of HAMs here, in more than one sense...uhum... There's a lot to be learned from the great folks here. Especially regarding mobile rig operation. I'm not always watching, but I can guarantee that others here are willing to help just the same. Enjoy!

    Rapid charging cradle and a extra battery are good things to have.

    I believe that you would "sacrifice" one vfo when running aprs. @m603holden can confirm.
    If you are using a dmr ht on a Hotspot and your don't have a cell signal, it's no good. You would need an internet connection. Unless you are near a pre programmed dmr repeater. But that's true for most 2m/440 comms, if you aren't near the repeater it's junk, unless you want to talk to the guys near you.

    Yeah. You only drop the b side that's dedicated to APRS. A side is still useable

    I agree, it's very simple to enter new info or update something that might not have been entered correctly. Being a new ham, I just pulled several repeater lists from local club websites to start building my own. I've probably whittled it down a good bit in the past couple of months. I did find the software useful to organize group scans on frequently traveled routes.

    Is that in the RT System programming software? I have not seen that option anywhere.
