It has to be the Brake Booster...Right?

So my pedal went hard today and I can hear a slight hiss from by my feet. I hit the brakes and I just kept oooon goooooing.

Some brake history if you will.

New cylinders in the drums a few years ago along with new shoes (still had plenty of pad left on the original shoes after 200k+ miles. New drums as well.

New Toyota remanufactured calipers a few years ago as well as the piston seals were shot and stuck. New Disks.
New master cylinder last year. The original was leaking fluid into the booster. I sucked brake fluid out of the booster with a syringe and an NG tube (from my sons medical issues as a baby ...came in handy)

I checked the hose and the check valve into the booster and they are fine.

Only thing left is the booster right? Don't want to buy a new booster only to find out I missed a $10 fix...

$786 for a new one...FML. Oh well it's 16 years old and had fluid leak into it. Bound to happen.

 

That's a little better than the 790$ I just got quoted for a 2004 nissan frontier ac compressor.

 

One of these Days I should change mine Had the new part for 2 years now.

I am just used to the brakes so don`t really notice it anymore.

 

If you have a mighty vac you can test it. I’m usually all about OEM but at that price what are the aftermarket options?

 

Yeah mine did the same thing, getting worse each day. Five days later it went out completely. You're lucky you can still get one by Toyota because it has been discontinued for my truck and I'm stuck with aftermarket.

 

Oh I'm OEM all the way. Sound's like that is the issue then... Oh well...

 

Oh brake booster for sure! Lol. If it is anything like my mustang, they are not fun to replace!! Just have beer by your side.

 

Doesn't look too bad actually. But we shall see...

 

There are tons of these in junk yards. Probably like $50.

 

This is the same issue I had recently. The master was losing fluid with no signs of a leak on the ground. Changed the master and fixed the fluid loss but added additional issues - brake pedal "clunked" and hissing noise appeared from the pedal area. Low and behold I found a remand booster at the pick a part, replaced the booster (no more than a 2 hour process) and it fixed my problem. Checked the old booster and it was filled with a full bottle of brake fluid sloshing around.

 

I'm on the fence about a used one. I've always just bought new and called it a day. But that has always been with stuff less than $200-$300.

Paku, I was mystified by that for a while. I thought it was my rear cylinders as they had fluid in the boots. But fluid kept disappearing after changing them out. Baffled, until one day I saw a little fluid under the master cylinder on the brake booster. My light bulb moment...

 

Well, it seems I may be out of luck. Toyota lists two different part numbers for boosters. One for 4WD is listed as discontinued. The other is still available. There has to be a difference because of the part numbers right?...

OK So, I just tried to order the booster from Toyota Parts Deal and they shot me back a change of order email because the part is discontinued...

Anyone else know where to get a Toyota booster. If I have to go to the aftermarket, what brand have y'all had luck with?

Crap I missed this... I ordered a booster from Rock Auto. It felt dirty. What does this guy do? Rebuild? High quality parts?

 

Brake boosters can be rebuilt using the appropriate rebuild kit

 

My 1997 4x4 Auto, 3RZ, booster went bad (non-ABS), the original part from Toyota is discontinued and so is the master cylinder. No problem, I just up graded & used the OEM TOY 2000-2004 booster and had to use the 2000-2004 Master cylinder as well to use the later booster which is a single diaphragm type. My Master cylinder was still good (original 270,000) but would not work with the new booster. You have to use all of the items that a 2000-2004 used, booster, booster spacer, master cylinder, vacuum hose, 3 way brake line valve. All brake lines lined up to the new 3 way. The biggest challenge was the clevis from the brake pedal to the booster. I had to make a longer one. I was determined to use OE Toyota parts, other wise you will have to go CHINA. I originally started on the china path and ordered the most expensive booster from RockAuto. It was a really nicely made and painted booster, most are not and come unpainted. I did find a NOS OEM Toyota master cylinder on eBay which was pricey. Returned both items and went OEM. More money to stay OEM but you still can use original Toyota, you do have an option. PM me and I will give you all the part #'s if you want to go down the OEM path.

 

if he can rebuild yours he will. Sometimes small parts aren't available. On GM products he can change how the brake pedal "feels" when you apply the brakes. He is my goto guy when I have an odd issue and while it might not mean anything coming from a stranger on a forum... I am trusting him with my life and my reputation.

 

Similar story here: booster went out last week (scary) and I put in the one O'Reily had just to have a functioning (safe) vehicle. Part number 44610-04060 for mine is discontinued as folks have mentioned--Amayama lists it as available, but I'm not too sure because so does ToyotaPartsDeal and some dealers in Florida but when you call they say no their online catalog is wrong and it is discontinued. If anyone thinks Amayama might have more stock let me know!

Two quick questions before I take my old booster down to Bush Power in San Diego:

1) Can anyone tell whether the old booster pictured below is OEM? Truck has only been mine for about three years and I don't want to rebuild a non-OEM booster. Some writing on it and the remains of a white sticker on top, the white sticker lines up with some of the OEM used boosters on eBay and the stamped inscriptions do not yield any hits when I run them through Google.

2) Has anyone run into someone in the Los Angeles area that might be as good as the Bush Power folks? Would like to save the drive if possible but not if it means sacrificing and the Bush Power folks sound knowledgeable and well-endorsed here.

Also, if anyone has found an OEM 44610-04060 for sale anywhere holler--looks like they were discontinued a few years ago though and there is no residual stock. Similar to the master cylinder (though that has a rebuild kit that's still available).

 

Same issue my buddies 02 4Runner had. Super quick fix with a new booster. He got a generic one off RockAuto that required him to send his back as a core. Was pnp, but we swapped out the crappy plastic vacuum line fitting the new part came with with the OEM one.
