The half rack is what I have and for pretty much the same reason, though mpgs are still affected no doubt. But would probably be worse if the tent is over the cab.

The big downside to having a half rack with the tent lower is that you lose valuable bed space, anything taller than the average cooler can't fit in my bed with the rack on.

How durable are the tent covers? several say they keep them on almost permanently. I'd think the cover would dry out eventually or are they really durable?

I got my first tent in sept 2015 a Tepui kukenam sky, I ran it hard until 2017 when I upgraded to the kukenam sky ruggedized. I've run the tent in every conceivable climate, tight trails, deserts, -17 and snowing, it's been worth every penny. I couldn't go back to ground tents ever again,

What's your storage solutions for these tents? I've seen some pictures of ceiling mounted pulley/rope lifts. Everything I can find made for that seems to have a max capacity of 100lbs (50lbs per rope) and the pulley wheels are plastic. The tent I have weighs 126lbs. I don't really want to push the rated capacity that much on some Chinese garage storage system that I park under daily.

odd question, what do you do with a 50lb dog that won't sleep in the cab alone at night with an RTT?

I just bit the bullet on a RTT and bought one. Did a ton of research and watched dozens of videos. From what I found, Tepui’s Ruggedized series is the most durable tent on the market. It’s not cheap though and is one of the heaviest options out there but from what I researched, it’s going to have the longest longevity. I ended up going with the Autana 3 from their ruggedized series. I am still waiting on mine to be delivered. Make sure you get a rack that can support the weight. I will have it setup with the Yakima Overhaul HD rack which is an adjustable rack with an on road weight of 500lbs, off road weight of 300lbs and a static weight capacity of 800lbs. This will give me some extra wiggle weight for my road shower, bike, awning, etc. It’s also one of the few compatible options for my Retrax cover and the adjustable beams will be nice to keep the functionality/space of my bed.
