SIERRA COUNTY, Calif. (KRON) – A Danville doctor and father of three was shot to death by a gunman while on a trip with his son over the weekend in Sierra County.

According to a page set up for the family, 45-year-old Ari Gershman was off-roading in a new four-wheel drive Jeep with his son Jack near Downieville when the two got lost in Tahoe National Forest.

At some point, an unidentified gunman opened fire on Gershman, killing him.

The fundraising page states Gershman’s son hid in the wilderness for over 30 hours until he was found by a search team and rescued Saturday.

In a Facebook , the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect was later stopped in an ATV and is suspected of shooting and wounding two other people in a separate attack Friday.

The suspect’s identity was not released, and the sheriff’s office said it will release more information “in the coming days.”

Ari Gershman leaves behind his wife Paige, who is “in the fight of her life right now undergoing Chemo treatments for Cancer,” and their three children, according to the family’s fundraising page.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

    RIP.

It’s a sad story and a little eye opening. Also why I pack while I’m camping and wheeling. I’ve run into some shady characters in the middle of the woods

This is nuts! Sounds like the gunman was off his rocker.

Sad news for his family, our community, Condolences to the family condolences to the family. The outdoors and 4x4 trails are a great way to escape people and reality in the first place! I hope that was really the person that they caught.

This is a real tragedy. Father a physician leaves 3 kids and a wife who has a life threatening type of cancer for which she is undergoing chemo. The murderer just walked up to the Jeep and shot the doctor. Even had the doctor been armed near impossible to defend against that. Very sudden, no warning. The son ran from the vehicle and was lost in the woods for 30 hours. The gun man also shot 2 other individuals that day. He was a career scum bag criminal. He was shot by police and brought down by a K9. Currently in jail. My prayers to the family.

Whenever Im in the woods, wilderness, back country I always go armed. Being armed saved my life one time and another time discouraged a couple tweakers from doing me harm. Go armed and always be prepared when you venture out there in remote areas.

There is a huge “hills” vs “flat lander” hatred in the foothills.

    it’s crazy.

even on the norcal recovery pages every little issue is blamed on “flatlanders” and tons of people posting about how they mess with people they find out are “from the bay” etc

all Under the umbrella of “the flat landers are screening things up and getting shit closed”.

In human psych, it doesn’t take truth to get people into a tissy and extreme hatred toward a group of people.

and when you mix that in with someone who is unstable...

There's areas all over this country like that. We've done a lot of road trips and have gone through areas where they look at you like you just landed an alien spacecraft. Small towns in Northern Idaho for example. They don't cotton to outsiders.
