I wanted to start a thread to chronicle the make-over of my 2003 Pre-Runner.

I've owned her since she was new, and she's been a great truck. However, about 6 years ago, the paint started to fail. The clear coat started to flake, the color coat started to crack, and generally she started to look like hell!

The fenders and the leading edge of the hood, and by far the worst spot. I didn't get any pictures of the roof, but it was nearly as bad.

OK. It's been a couple of days (in real time) since I started the project. After removing the badges and stickers, I had to decide how far to take the prep. I decided to take it all the way! I've removed flares, antenna, bumpers, factory bed liner, tail lights, and all of the door handles in preparation for sanding. In short, if I can figure out how to get it off, it's coming off.

Prep is in progress. The really rough spots were sanded to bare metal and primed. Where the clear coat had failed, I sanded back to solid paint. I scuffed the surface with 80 grit anywhere the paint and clear coat were still pretty good. I filled the few small dings in the body work, did some more (make that lots more) sanding, and then wipe the whole thing down with solvent. I separated the bed so that I could paint around the back of the cab. That way there shouldn't be a visible line when I'm done.

It's go time! The first coat is going on and so far, so good. The color isn't an exact match, but I think it'll be close enough that the difference won't be too noticeable in places like the jambs. It defiantly has a texture, but because Monstaliner doesn't seem to have that really rough texture like the Herculiner or Rustoleum equivalents.
    [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

I also did the first coat on the bed in plain old black. The factory bedliner really did it's job. It was scratched and there was some surface rust to deal with, but no dents.

Looks good! Are you spraying it on? What kind of gun and regulator are you using?

Looks really good. I'm going to apply Monstaliner in the bed of mine so I can get rid of the factory plastic one. Good choice on using 80 grit sandpaper to scuff it. Should be good enough for the coating to latch on to. Curious to see how it holds up over time compared to other DIY bedliners, especially since some of them don't have a UV protectant in them.

Looks really good. Was going to use monstaliner liner or al’s Bedliner on mine.
Used Raptor instead. Sprayed with their premium gun. I can really appreciate
all the work it takes. Nice Job PSmith.

I like the texture finish but without the sand paper feel. That's what it looks to be. I'm impressed that you got those results with the roller.

I toyed with the idea of spraying, but I've never used a spray gun and didn't want to experiment on this scale. The roller probably makes harder it to keep a consistent finish, but the material is remarkably forgiving.

Welcome to the Monstaliner club! I rolled mine on less than a year ago, but the desert sun has been beating on it for a while and it still looks as good as when it was fresh.

What color is that? Just black or one of the darker Greys?

Ive been prepping my Tundra for Med Quartz Grey finally going on this weekend.

Both look great, makes me feel better about the 4 gallons of it in the garage!

It's Pyroclastic. At first I wanted to get close to the cement color on the 3rd gens, but didn't think the lighter color would look right.

I considered that color but was concerned it would look like faded black. I almost went Lt Quartz to minimize difference in door jambs (silver truck). Darker color won the 2 year color debate so hopefully im happy haha.

Looks good again both of you!

Dam, that looks really good for a roll on paint job.Did you use a small brush for getting around the head lights and other small places. Trees and Brush should naturally bend out of the way on trails for fear of loosing their bark.
