This thread is usually pretty slow mid week. Sunday is always the big day.

Here are a couple of other photos I took Monday up on the Bighorns. I was up there checking a spot I found where peregrine falcons usually nest. It's active again this year. The first photo is momma falcon standing guard over the nest. The nest ledge is below her out of frame.

The second is the nest ledge. You can just see a bit of white down of one of the babies. They aren't the best photos because I couldn't get very close, and I only have a little point and shoot camera.

Yep every time I am on the North Shore of Lake Superior hunting around the Boundary Waters Wilderness Area seems like the challange is always 180 degrees for the environment. I've come to expect it LOL.

I like the peregrine a lot! We have fewer than 75 nesting pairs in Minnesota but at least that has held steady for awhile now. 25 of them are on the North Shore. Rest are mainly along the bluffs of the Mississippi River. They can live to be 20 years old in the wild. Most don't make it that long in the Midwest though due to Urban Architecture Buildings.

At work we have a resident nesting pair in one of our taller buildings and the chicks are relocated to the bluffs by the river. Mayo Clinic peregrine falcon program. The number one cause of death for them in Minnesota is the great horned owl one of the few predators they have. Last year a great horned was caught on video attacking a nesting box at Great Spirit Bluff in La Crescent, Mn. I shoot super sporting (sporting clays) in La Crescent on Mondays when I can get off work.

I know where a nesting pair is, it is in a State Park of all places. Was fly fishing and coming back to the truck and heard one on a bluff that overlooks a picnic area in the park. Were 25-30 people at the picnic benches and walking around and not a single person looked up. And never has since I have been back to check on the falcons. Amazes me how oblivious so many people are but suspect most of the people there are from the Cities and clueless to begin with.

That video of the great horned owl attack is incredible. I'm very surprised the peregrine was the victor. Great horned owls are bigger and stronger than peregrines. A one-on-one out it the open sky, during daylight, yea a peregrine would tear up an owl. But at night, in close quarters I would have bet on the owl. Owls are amazing predators. Not the brightest, but amazing predators none-the-less. My first falcon, a peregrine x prairie falcon hybrid was killed by a great horned owl.

I’ve been out of cell range all week. now I’m forced to do yard maintenance at home. My wife has been watching Christmas in July on Hallmark channel all morning and for that reason here’s a photo!

Only 2 entries this week. I had taken a couple of pictures to pick one to enter, but I got wrapped up in watching Avatar: The Last Airbender and forgot.
