Hey guys. About two days ago my rear end on my '05 SR5 Tacoma decided to blow up. No, it wasn't the trucks fault, I was being stupid. Anyways, I checked the door jamb and removed the 3rd member and the differential is a 3.73 8.4'' LSD. I am having much difficulty with trying to find one of those in decent condition anywhere. If I understand correctly, any of the trucks past 08' don't have a mechanical LSD, but some type of brake LSD instead. Can this still be installed? Will the 8.4 from 4Runners fit if its the same ratio? Thanks guys, just trying to find a diff as quick as possible so I can get my truck going. My local dealer said just the diff would be 3k, thats without labor. Unfortunately I can't afford that and am looking for some better options.

Okay thank you. So even though this diff is said to be a limited slip, all the work is actually done through the brakes? So If i install that diff from the 2010, will the LSD even work if I am putting it in a 05'?

    what is a ' brake LSD ' .........

    ive had 2 tacoz................both with a ' Geared Traction ' rear end
there are at least 1/2 doz references to the many rear ends

    anti spin
    limited slip
    lockers
    geared

hard to believe a salvage yard doesnt have a rear end like Urz in 15years

    good luck

From the small amount of information I could find, it uses the brakes to slow down a specific tire if it senses slippage instead of having an actual, mechanical LSD. This information may or may not be correct, just what I could find. All I am trying to figure out is if the LSD 3.73 from the 10' will work for my 05', since as mentioned before they switched from mechanical to electrical LSD.

No, it will not work. Your truck doesn’t have the computer to operate the “electronic LSD”
If you run that Diff, it will be an Open Diff. Traction will suck, and I really think you’ll regret it.

Yeah I am unsure if maybe the previous owner had the axle replaced possibly? It is 100% a LSD though.

Yeah, I was replying to the guy I quoted.

How soon do you need the diff?
    And what is your budget?
ECGS can send you a whole 3rd member setup, ready to drop-in.
You could even have a few mods done to make it better.

Well minimum time I would say to get a diff anyways is about 2 weeks with shipping. Max I would say 1300-1400.

Any reason you wouldn’t want a truetrac? I’ve toyed with the idea of replacing the Gov-lock in my Chevy with a truetrac.

    I think core is $400
I would call them, they will know what you need.
If you do have them build/send one. I recommend the extra $40 charge for the spacer.

@EatSleepTacos may have some other ideas.
