Yea, it was not my first accident but it was definitely the worst I have ever been in. I had to have surgery on my hand, the prominent one. I also have some lingering health issues. We are definitely going to switch insurance companies. I had full documentation of every single mod and proof that everything was is mint condition. The sad part, I have been with State Farm for nearly 40 years and bundle 3 vehicles and our home.

I'm sure you've already explored going after the at-fault's insurance, or him civilly.

In my case, I had an agent look for a policy for me (one of Dave Ramsey's "ELPs"). He proceeded to write me a policy, and later I discovered it would not cover my mods. IIRC, it was from a company that covered antique and classic vehicles, and my vehicle wasn't either one of those, so not covered. I ended up researching Progressive, and the policy I got had a value for the mods. They had to be documented of course, and I couldn't just pick some astronomical value and expect to be reimbursed without proof, but they were covered, for a cost.

Also, this wasn't the first time one of Dave Ramsey's ELPs were less than helpful.

The point of insurance is (should be) to make you whole again. If you paid $900 hundred for a roof rack and that same rack is $750 it's reasonable for ins to fork over the $750. Unfortunately all most of us can do is bend over and take it.

I'm not arguing that. Nor am I arguing the fact that insurance companies try to pay out as little as possible. My point is you need to make sure you're buying the insurance you need.

If you own a McMansion, but you buy home insurance and tell the agent it's a double-wide trailer, then don't be surprised you aren't "made whole" for a claim. To use Progressive as an example again (as that's what I'm familiar with), they state in my policy that I'm not covered for more than $5K additional mods unless I specifically state (and pay for) more.

And, I'm not in the insurance business, other than to open my wallet a few times a year to them.

Yea, I would have been happy with pro-rated prices on everything. I didn't want any more than I deserved. But as an example, for them to tell me the aftermarket SCS wheels and Nitto tires weren't covered because the truck came with wheels and tires is bull shit. They considered the sliders the same thing as the predators it came with. All in all, I had nearly $8k in mods. $2k is not even scratching the surface of fair. Then they gave me the option to replace anything I wanted to salvage. I would have to do this during the week, during working hours, and just having surgery and being out of work for a week and a half this is unrealistic. Everything would have to of been done in the confine of the holding yard, and with battery operated tools.

    Freaking impossible.

The policy documents are what governs. You are wise to check them. What the agent tells you isn't worth anything. Typical policies are written for the average owner, which I'd guess not many of us here are.

fuuuuu....hope you're doing better. That sucks about that. We have State Farm too...my wife's family has been on it for almost 30 years now and we have a great rate for our house and cars, which is why my life had me switch from USAA. I regret that decision, even though USAA was more expensive.

Curious how much adjuster impacts this. I've read tips from a few places, be very specific to what item you had. If you don't have model detail be very specific about what the item was. Instead of toaster, say metal plated 4 slide toaster with 12 setting knob and side window. One gets you the $12 toaster on Amazon and the other is more likely to get you the $45 toaster from bed bath bodyworks and beyond

I have receipts & installation photos, and in some cases video. After all was said and done I knew I was going to get another Tacoma, and I knew I was going to mod it some. So this time I asked, "can I add more coverage for any mods I do going forward?" and they told me no.

They also told me there is no windshield policy. I got a chip once in my sedan and went to Safelite and after I booked it online, and arrived the guy happened to ask me what insurance I have. I said oh, it doesn't matter, SF doesn't offer a policy, and the guy said well I can reduce the cost 50% just because you have SF.

I hear Geico or even Progressive is good.

Yikes. I’ve gotten my windshield replaced for free (no deductible) twice already through State Farm. Wonder if it’s state by state

I think some states mandate windshield coverage. I've got vehicles registered and insured in two states - NM and SC. Both with Progressive. SC has windshield coverage, NM does not.

Why are you going through your insurance when it wasn't your fault? Or did the at fault driver also just happen to have State Farm?

The other driver didn't have any insurance. Or any estate.

    Hey Folks,

I turned in my wings at Eibach and now work for Hypercoil, which is another spring manufacturer. I’ll still be around, but will not be answering any Eibach related PM’s.
