My coworker had her 18 Sport stolen out of her driveway this past weekend. The police said the truck is probably on its way to Africa or the Middle East.
She told me that when I get my keys I should “silence” my keys to stop them from transmitting. Has anyone heard of silencing keys?
What does everyone here use as a theft deterrent?

Wow those are some brave thieves to steal a vehicle out of someones driveway, they must have done it pretty quickly because if someone catches them their likely to get a shotgun to the face if caught.

Look in the OM. It has something to do with holding / tapping two of the buttons. It will fully shut off the fobs until you press a button again.

Otherwise, just store the fob in a metal container. Test this for confirmation.

Automakers are transitioning to a fob that powers itself off if it is sitting stationary for a certain amount of time.

No. It won't work (transmit) if you don't pull it out of the pouch.

I have a 4 runner with push button, it will not start if the key is not in it. I had it in the door with it open and it still would not start.

Or you could do what is free and comes standard. Quickly press the unlock button twice while holding the lock button. It stops the remote from transmitting and won’t allow you to use keyless entry. But every time you hit lock or unlock on the remote you have to do the same thing to “silence” it.

yeah, there’s a huge ring in Canada to steal cars and sell them to the Middle East

The way people are stealing cars is they are relaying the fob signal and extending the range with a box they place outside your house. They gain access and can start the car and drive away. At which point they reprogram for new keys

It always does, unfortunately. Last thread on the same subject was also started by a Canadian, if I recall.
But, yeah, protect your RF fob would be the best option.

In the end if they want it bad enough they will get it. Everything you can do to prevent theft is just a deterrent as anyone with a motorcycle knows. Figuring out ways to add to your list of deterrent without making the whole thing a burden on you is the hard part. Remotely capturing the fob signal when you unlock and lock a vehicle is not something you can realistically deter against so don't waste your time worrying about it. Copying your fob info or relaying it because it's next to the front door or near a ground floor window is something much easier to deter against. Signal jamming so you don't lock the vehicle is something that can happen much easier than you think. I use to have a 2006 Pontiac GTO and every night when the local shipyard was doing radar testing on new carriers or Langley afb was up to something I could never lock or unlock the car with the fob. Hell, I use to carry a cell phone jammer into movie theaters until about 8 years ago just to keep assholes off their phone. They are easy to make and cheap to buy. Be sure the vehicle is locked before you walk away.

The thieves have devices now that can boost the keyfob from the house.
