    Similar story - mom&pop open up a local donut shop. Dunkin Donuts builds a shop next door, even with a drive thru. Several months later the Dunkin is closed. Years later, mom&pop business still thriving.

    it's easier to keep a shop open when you don't have to pay royalties for a name, buy from specific vendors, etc. It's easier to get the loan for a franchise, but it is much harder to make money with one. It's like having a HOA on your business.

    All true.

    Though arguably, national and local TV print and radio advertising, promotions including gift cards, name recognition, and having a drive through all are advantages the mom and pop doesn’t enjoy and all of which offset the costs of a franchise.

    I went to B school with a guy who now owns several Dunkin stores. Franchising hasn’t hurt him one bit, he’s makin bank. Yet his stores aren’t going up against a higher quality mom and pop op.
