I'll be visiting the Flagstaff area for my first time end of July. I Plan on being there 3-4 days before continuing on to Colorado. I'm looking for some trail and camping recommendations. We prefer solitude and are open to primitive camping with no facilities. Free, no reservation camping is a plus. We would like to setup a base camp for a couple days and explore the hiking and off road trails.

What are good places near Flagstaff to visit in July? Any must do hikes or off road trails? My truck is mostly stock except for rock-sliders but I am very experienced offroad.

Thanks in advance for any help!

With the rise of COVID. We were tested before leaving Florida and tested again here. Both negative.
However the Natives on the Reservations have been hit hard. They go into lock down every night at 8pm till 5am weekdays. Weekends are 8pm Friday till 5am Monday. So any travel through them is only allowed on main highways. Depending on the owners the gas stations may be closed except for outside only transactions.

up here. Masks are mandatory to enter. Plus limited occupancy and try to keep distance.
I was lucky to get a hair cut yesterday. Haven’t had one since February.

I just read the document. It list all the areas that are closed and most of them are campgrounds. What about primitive dispersed camping or just using the off-road trails and hiking trails? Do you know if that's closed too? I'll call the ranger when I have time but was just wondering if you knew. Thanks.

The forest is not closed, I have been camping every week this month with no issues. I hope it rains soon or they might get shut down for fire restrictions.

I understand the concerns for the Flagstaff area but sites in Sedona and Fossil creek are included as well, how are those related? I was also Driving through Flag a couple of weeks ago to witness the anti-police protests. That was a special experience.

I'm still planning on heading to the Flagstaff area end of next week. I plan on being there around 4-5 days. I have a few places in mind for primitive truck camping (thanks to some folks on this thread). Mostly in and around the Coconino NF. Just wondering if I am missing any information about Covid 19. From what I gathered on the interwebs I should be good on primitive camping. I won't need any facilities. Just checking to see if anyone knows of any restrictions I might have missed. Also, if you consider any trails in Coconino a "must do" while I'm their. Thanks in advance.

There’s recent camping restrictions closer to Flagstaff. I remember reading recently. Might have to check the NSF page or call rangers.
as for trails. Shultz pass is a good sight seeing one. The back way to Lockett Meadow is open currently, I think only because the gate is broken. No temp gate up. So it’s a toss up. It’s a not bad trail. Stock can make it. Just air down take time pick right lines. Any Qs or worries I can help. It’s 20mins from me.
You can also do the behind the peaks trail. Again simple maintained FSR. Good for views. Can end up in north Kaibab forest and explore from there.
As for any challenging trails. I don’t know of anything other than once south into Sedona. Still new to the area myself.
Can always pm me for phone if you want.

I have been in Flag camping every week since the beginning of June. I drove to Lockett last week and it was closed. I believe all Forest service campgrounds(Coconino) are closed. Dispersed camping is fine. I just found out there is a bunch of AZ state trust land near Flag that is available for the cost of a permit. I also drove up a-1 mountain rd as well as fr 171 north of Bellemont all the way to Fr222 and it was loaded with campers/ RV's. Drove to Dogtown lake near Williams on Sunday and it was packed as well, the Campground was open. It is in Kaibab forest. As far as the Covid most businesses are requiring masks in and around Flag. As you travel away from the city the rules seem more relaxed. Bearizona was a 50% mask/no mask ratio.
