Camp kitchen storage setup

looking for a camp kitchen storage setup

I currently have a camp chef everest (love the stove, has plenty of BTU's at full burn)

I looked at the chuck box camp kitchen, but my stove does not fit @ 23.5x13.5x4" and they are kinda pricey at $279..

anyone have a DIY kitchen box that isnt ridiculously overpriced,heavy, and doesnt waste a lot of space?

my stuff:

GSI bugaboo 4 place setting kit
GSI fold up SS 8"nonstick pan
GSI santoku knife set w/case
Jetboil Flash
2-3 1 lb. bottles propane (looking at a 5-11lb growler/composite tank setup)
2-3 8-10 oz. Iso-propane bottle for jetboil

4 SETS METAL CAMP KNIVES SPOONS FORK
1 SMALL SPATULA 10" long
1 Dehydrated food spoon (long handle)

small bottle olive oil
spice shaker ( 5 spice)
salt & pepper shakers (disposables)
sugar (cardboard tube shaker type)

everything else (fire starters, citronella candles, thermocell bug repellant) is camping stuff that can stay in a smaller tote Plano sportman trunk, or condense into bags in my truck tools/fluids Plano box.


I'm trying to condense my stuff while protecting them from elements

would like it to fit under my tonneau cover so 19" max height, & lightweight, and as little wasted space as possible. I ride rought logging roads a LOT so needs to be able to withstand the bumps, and shaking for hours! not to mention be sealed to keep dust out.

 

I got away from hard cases and started using soft sided zippered bags when I bought my first boat and tried to go camping with my wife. Some of those are padded. We have one for $$ sold new as "insulated" and one for super cheap that was a used diaper bag I bought at a garage sale for like a quarter from a seriously OCD type mom.

We also put a lot of food related items in an "action packer" but I also like the ones like the post office uses that should internet search hit as "round trip tote" like USPS uses.

We generally have the jetboil and the tea and sugar in the "cooler bag" so we can stop on a beach for tea and use the action packer as a counter top.

 

I built one that fit perfectly in the bed of my 2007 Tacoma with tonneau cover on. The gen 3 bed must be a bit taller because now there is an inch gap when closed up. This is what it looks like in full use. The doors close shut and the top "wings" flip over for a smaller package.

 

Damn. I need to up my game.

 

Christie packs all our utensils in a plastic pencil box. A small home office materials in a small pencil box, and she uses Tic Tac containers to cary spices in which pack in another Pencil box. Easy to pack and stow. She has another small box with a shotglass in it and an assortment of the small liquor bottles so I can have a drink if I choose to.

 

Not exactly portable. Camp Chef 3 burner stove with 24” cast iron flat top.

 

I am going to start a build soon, I'll post up what I come up with.

 

I still have a pair of these. Found them on sale 20 years ago at Walmart, and they have seen rough use ever since.



Kitchen went in one with home made dividers to keep it organized. Tent, mattress and chairs went in the other. They keep your crap protected when in storage, locked and dry when in travel mode, and make terrific benches/step ladders/end tables/hold-my-beer-units when in camp mode.

Nowadays I'm hauling a trailer, but on occasion I'll still tote one of these along for miscellaneous items. They might look humble, but I can't sing their praises enough for versatility.

 

I come from the backpacking end of the spectrum so I just bring as little as I can get away with...but I really like the idea of a box that has everything organized, especially if it doubles as storage.

Damn, I actually have a 6U rack similar to this without the wheels. It has an old QSC amp racked in it but I haven't used it in years. I hadn't considered repurposing it. I might have to think about it and see how I can build this thing out. Thanks for the idea.

 

If you're looking for some cheap waterproof cases these Husky ones from Home Depot are a champ. They come in black now too. I had three of them thrown in an open bed and went on a 10 day trip through NM and CO. Dirt roads and hard rain. Kept my stuff dry and dirt free.
