Is it necessary to install a full skid package since the OR model comes skid plates on engine/"front-suspension", or would you just get transmission and rear skid?

The stock OR “skid plate” is very wimpy (1/16” thick steel estimated). I can bend it with my hands. I would call it a splash guard. It will protect from water, mud, rocks, and other debris being kicked up. It will not protect from a hit from a solid object like a big rock. It does serve as a warning signal if you are moving slowly and contact a big rock. I recently replaced mine with a TRD Pro skid plate. It is much beefier (1/4” aluminum).

It depends on what your plans are and weight vs protection. I run around in the desert mostly, and occasionally in the mountains/ forests. I got an aluminum front engine skid, and I’m considering a mid skid as well. I’m back and forth between steel or aluminum for that one as it might be in the high center area so I may go with steel for it. Steel is better protection, but weighs much more, weight adds up quick on the truck, but if you think you’ll hit them frequently, or hard hits on rocks, then steel might be best for you. Stock skids, as mentioned, are only good to be a splash guard and not much else.

I agree with previous post. It depends on what your plans are. The aluminum sheet the OR comes with does work, of course, but only for a certain amount of time/abuse.

    Here's part of mine

For my use, instead of going to skid plates first, I decided to lift it first. Most of the clearance I've needed would've been solved by a lift. If I still need skids, definitely going steel.

My 2020 OR did not come with an aluminum skid plate. It came with a thin sheet metal splash guard that is not structural. The Pro comes with a 1/4” aluminum skid plate that is a lot beefier.

For running on the beach and getting to the camp site at the state park, the stock truck is fine.
