I agree with you that it would get tested to their standards, but it is a small and good change in the scheme of things.

I'm not sure how Toyota handles non-working fobs; dead battery/broken, since I have a keyed ignition Tacoma. I do know my Audi has backup options, such as a physical key is located within the key fob so you can physically unlock the car door if needed. You can place the fob on a certain area of the center console to start the car if the battery in the fob is weak, not sure if it will work if it's completely dead. I do know that the car itself will alert you if your fob battery needs to be replaced well before it dies. Some owners also carry an extra battery for their key fobs in the glove box just in case.
I'm sure Toyota has similar back ups as well.

I think they got the idea from the days when they would do that to get your garage remote signal then newer garage models have rolling codes so maybe they make your key fob the same way. Maybe not

On my truck its just a key fob with keyless entry and push button start but it has a little small emergency key that pops out of the side of the key fob in case the key fob stops working so that you can open the doors of the truck.

Yeah, I would think having the fob operate like an RSA token would solve the issue.

If you’re worried about it at work, then either disable the FOB or get one for your desk drawer/locker.

Depending on the amount of other keys you may have, an altoids tin might not be big enough. I never tested one of those tins before so I can’t say if it would work. But yea, at $20 (or whatever it is) you can’t go wrong with this small box.

My boomer father still drives his 1970 cutlass with a 4 speed, he has no complaints.

It was a joke, don't take it personally, unless you don't know how to use the 3rd pedal. ;)

For the person looking for another layer of anti-theft security, I suggest using the technology Toyota has already included. The truck will not drive if the brake pedal and gas pedal are stepped on at the same time, this has been bitched about by a few wishing to do burnouts. How difficult would it be to wire in a switch that when you flip it on makes the truck think the brake pedal is depressed. You'd just have to flip it on when exiting and flip it off when you get in. You could even use one of those aftermarket switches that look like OEM: Ditch lights, LED bar, etc. Seems like it would work

I was just kidding, as that’s always the go-to line when talking about vehicle thefts now lol.
As a member of the civilized modern world, yes, I know how to drive a manual. ...but only because I used to work in an uncivilized part of the world that considered automatics to be witchcraft. lol

Theives have access to YouTube just like anyone else and the club is easily bypassed in seconds. The only added benefit to a visual deterent like the club is a theif knows the vehicle owner is parinoid and might have also included a kill switch. The uncertainty will make most theives pass on a vehie that is a dime a dozen on the streets.

I started a thread on this in January but it's been erased... There were 5 Tacomas stolen from my neighborhood (near Ottawa) a week before I got my 2020 so I was pretty concerned about getting mine. They're after Lexus and Toyota higher end vehicles. There are 2 methods this theft ring is using. The fob signal and the OBD II port. A dude just down the street had his keys in a faraday box and his Taco was taken from his driveway. Getting a dummy OBD II port installed and moving the original port elsewhere is a good cheap deterrent. I had that done and I turn off my fob every night. On top of this, since it's people who are technology inclined doing this with specialized equipment and laptops, I put the good ol' fashion club on the steering wheel too, figure that may slow them down or deter them completely... I do install the club behind the steering wheel with the keyhole facing the gauges. Good luck picking that. Cut the wheel if you want it that bad...

For situations where truck is left for a few days at a trailhead, why not remove the fuse #24 for the starting system?
