Hi guys. I'm so glad to be back in the Toyota 4x4 family (former Tundra and 4Runner owner). I picked up a 2015 base with 78,000 miles last week. Six days later it turns over but doesn't start. No warning lights came on (in fact, the MIL/CEL was missing entirely, e.g. wouldnt flash at ignition). Called the dealer who said he would fix it Monday. But now Im worried I just bought one of the few unreliable Tacoma's out there. Pre-purchase inspection, we saw electrical work had been done, and the last owner had a similar issue (Sep & Nov 2019 service records show work done when engine would turn but not start), but assumed the issue was fixed. Apparently not, and I have pit in my stomach that I just bought a lemon. I'm in NY, so by law the dealer has to fix major defects within first 60 days. Any suggestions on how to handle this with the dealer? Or what I can do to ensure I have a reliable vehicle? Thanks for any guidance. Also, its not an immobilizer issue, checked the key.

With the key in the ignition, does the “security key” light flash or go off?

It goes off. I was hoping that that was the problem but it is something else.

UPDATE: truck starts. Check engine light comes on before ignition but doesn't stay on. Showing code p0102 for MAF. Im worried the dealer will send me on my way since it started. But now I have the same problem as the last owner.

Yes, fuses look fine. I think the fuel pump was replaced less than a year ago based on service record.

No security system. Looks like someone rewired the main harness at some point. We assumed that it was the dealership who worked on the issue last year or before that. Had been dealer serviced from day 1. Not much after market stuff. There seemed to have been an LED light on the bull bar. And the headlights are not stock. Also, not sure the 17 inch rims were stock, but thats all from what I can tell.

And its back to not starting this morning. Turns over but doesnt start. The check engine light does not cycle on at position two with ignition. So is the ECU not working? Not grounded? The dealer is supposed to come today to pick it up.

    Same crap everyone else got
You have a MAF code. Has the MAF sensor been replaced? My old cobra would turn, run for 1 second, then die or not start at all but would crank. Replace the MAF sensor and all was well. I'd start there, esp b/c thats is the code you're getting.

Thanks, good point. Did your check engine light come on for that? My Tundra would always show a warning light when there was a MAF issue. My main worry is that the check engine doesnt cycle on at ignition indicating the ECU isnt going through the entire start routine. I know the check engine light works, came on yesterday, but when it doesnt, thats when I have the starting issue.

    Thanks for the input everyone!

That car was only driven probably once a month. So when not driven, the negative battery cable was disconnected which would clear any code at that point. So if a code or engine light was thrown it may not have shown b/c the battery had just been reconnected.

UPDATE: Dealer replaced the interior fuse box, said it had a bad connection and everything has been working fine so far. Thanks again for all the advice all.
