Recap of yesterday. Left the house at 5, got to the trailhead at 7:20. Started hiking at 7:30. Climbed 4K vertical feel and 5 miles in 2.5 hours. Got to the lake. Threw my go to trout magnets. No takes in about 20 mins. Finally switched it up and decided to throw a fly with a bobber. Got hit probably 20-30 times in 4 hours but COULD NOT SET THE HOOK. I think I need a smaller bobber because the bubble I was using was too heavy and I couldn’t drag it up fast enough to tighten the line to set the hook. Finally as we were about to leave because we ate all our food, and we’re getting sunburned to hell. I threw a gold trout magnet and on the second cast I hooked up! I ended up catching 4 but only have pictures of 2. Fortunately the pics were of the two biggest ones of the day! Here’s the first one! Was an absolute blast. Beautiful lake too.

Snap! Great eye - I pulled in a few and I thought they were all brookies. On second look, definitely not.

    What is that one?!

I see the spots which I always thought was a distinguishing factor?

Depending on where you live either an immature rainbow or steelhead smolt

Those large vertical marks that Look like dark smudges are called parr marks. Sexually immature trout of all species wear them.
Easiest way to tell a char (Brookie, bull, dolly, etc) is they have light spots on a dark background whereas rainbows cutties and browns have dark spots in a lighter background. If that makes sense lol

also Brookies have squiggles (vermiculations) on their back

Ah! That is great to know. I've only been fishing for a few years now in these areas and still learning every time I am out. Thanks for the knowledge!
