It was the driver side one that got abused at the stealership. Put it in the sun for a bit. It's fine now. Already have one in the back. Gets little abuse there. It's fine. Thanks for the tag, though.

Im looking at bedracks for RTT's and general RTT do's and donts.

Initially i was going to go with the BAMF low-pro rtt rack, but 13" is a little on the high side for my desires i think. Id love for the tent to be flush with or just lower than the deck of a prinsu style roof rack. Im sure the rtt itself will vary in packed heights but im not 100% sure which rtt i'll end up with. Presumably the cheap-o smittybuilt one, since I'm familiar with it and it seems like a good starting point. I can always upgrade years down the road if i want.

I'd like to mount axe/shovel on one side, traction boards on the other. Both things id prefer not on a roof rack over the cab, or inside of the bed if i can avoid it; but would want with me on any journey. So i think bed bars for the most part are very low profile, but they typically dont offer mounting solutions. So, i think a rack or cage is the way to go. I'm sure bolting into the bed mounting bolts* is much more sturdy than the bed rails and while i like the idea of not taking up bedspace with metal tubing, my fat ass may desire the more sturdy option.

So im also debating having Brute Force Fab make me a cage, which will end up costing me probably $1200. But i can score the bed rail mounted rack for half that. Probably could have bamf make something more custom aswell if i wanted to go that route.

Talking with @Twizted whom i know has been there, done that. I am the most familiar with what he's done so I use him as my control group/think tank as I contemplate where and how to throw more money into the rabbit hole lol He brought up replacing he plastic bed rail caps, which i think would be a good idea. May pickup some KBvoodoo rail caps regardless of which route i take. (TC bed stiffeners are already installed)

Wat say some others of you?

@TOP TACO has a sweet setup that deserves honorable mention, but its not the route I'd like to go at the moment.

@bot102 youre setup is pretty tall if i remember right. Your tent is not the smitty but its dam close aswell.

PS: Anyone in the market for an A.R.E. Z-Series shell for a long bed in possibly the rarest color? haha

Don't remember which one, but thought there was one version that didn't rely solely on the bed rails for support. Something more stable that mounts to the bed for more stability, and strength. Or did both. Can't recall. But seems to me that anything mounted just to the rails would be suspect. I'll look around. Thought about this for my truck down the line sometime. Or not.

Several companies make "cages" that bolt through the bed into the frame (or whatever the hell the bed bolts too). I would think those would be way stronger than the bed rails. But my price would double (buy once cry once, i know lol).

However, most of those cages typically run the length of the bed aswell. Which will leave empty real estate up there when the rtt is mounted (unless i got a GIANT rtt).

So parts of me are leaning away from the full length cage

not a big fan of white claws but had some of the lemonade truly's last week and add a shot or two of tequila ... i only needed a couple on an empty stomach and i was passed out on the couch.

I had a pair of the taller relentless fab bed bars (mounts to the rails only) and my tepui ayer would sit just about flush with the top of my prinsu. I had a shovel and axe on one side and high lift mount on the other. I had traction boards on the prinsu. it worked perfectly well on trails and what not. I wanted to get a brute force bed cage but ended up going the drifter route.

@Motofox the last three years I had a BAMF bed rack, a set of bed bars, and now a custom bed rack. I must say I like the bed bars. I could weld or bolt plates for mounting points on it and it wouldn’t hurt the wallet.

I love how easily it is to reach into the bed and grab what I need with bed racks.

I dislike how dust and dirt gets all over the place. I also dislike the fact that I can’t just pull into a casino or a place to eat on the way home after a trip and have to worry about thieves.

I have considered and might go the route of a camper shell with a rack and a second roof rack.

a lot of trials and $ so far.

but damn it is so much fun!

Hey guys, been lurking for a bit but picked up a 1st gen double cab last week so will be more active. I’m out in Livermore just wondering if anyone has recs on shops in the area. I do the typical maintenance myself but would like to know where to go when the time comes. Been told about shaffers in alameda but just curious where everyone takes their truck around here

i found a ‘low-gloss’ black paint at Napa thats in between matte and semi-gloss that works well. Used it in my wheel wells when I pulled the liners/hammered back the pinch welds. I’ll see if I still have a can and post a picture.

I use that home depot gloss black. A buck a can. Once it gets muddy the gloss wears off.

Might not work for you sam, since it just sits in the driveway. You will have one shiny ass undercarriage :crapstorm:
