I just installed the upper airbox and flow accelerator on mine with an HPS hose. You will need to trim the hose back about one inch on the airbox end.

My loving Wife just ordered all the pieces for my TRD CAI. I plan on using the stock air filter too. Thanks to all who added input.

I was thinking of doing this as well.. what's you're opinion, sound and throttle response wise?

I want a TRD intake but $400 is pretty steep for a slight change in sound. Would be looking for possible increase in power.

Somehow my trd intake did not come with the trd filter, weird. Ordered the K&N for now, should be in tomorrow. Currently running the stock filter.

Strange! My TRD CAI came with a factory pre-oiled filter and labels to put on that said not to throw it away, etc.

That’s a sweet looking intake. If it wasn’t for all my branded TRD stuff that came with my Pro, I probably would have gone with the AFE.

Regarding that plug... I believe that port is intended for the optional “ram scoop” that can be mounted over the top of the radiator. Opening that port as-is will suck in more hot air from the engine bay diminishing performance. Keep it closed and the intake will only suck in the cooler air from the fender which is ideal.

You are spot on regarding the charcoal filter. I tried it with my stock box and no difference. Be careful with those K&N filters... they are notorious for letting in dirt and dust. I’d recommend Amsoil or the TRD air filter.

Hey all. I know this thread is fairly old. But I won this TRD intake in a youtube giveaway and so I installed it. I think its very nice. It does seem to provide a little better throttle response, especially when you really get on the gas from a cruising speed. I think towing my Travel Trailer I'll see some benefit as well although I'm not expecting anything great. You can see my write-up here : https://www.overlandz.com/tacoma-trd-air-intake/

I have... added the flow accelerator, the TRD panel filter and nixed the carbon filter. Any measurable gain? Nope, but I do feel it gets the most out of the stock system for a fraction of the cost of the full intake.

There was slightly more induction noise after the install. Since I only swapped the accelerator, panel filter and removed the carbon filter I can't really speak to what folks are feeling with the full intake swap, but one of the reasons I kept the stock intake tube was to retain the larger Helmholtz resonator. Keeping the larger resonator decreases the overall induction noise but also helps with initial throttle response versus a smaller or nonexistent resonator.

I second the above. Helmholtz resonators are cool things. The throttle response lag from drive by wire is far more noticeable than any difference from a resonator.
I’m happy the TRD intake still works with my SC kit. Still looks sexy. Also cleaned the filter for the first time. I used the cheap spectre brand cleaning kit. Works the same as the expensive K&N or TRD stuff.
