Hi...new member here. Thinking about selling or trading my 4x4 Canyon for a new or gently used Taco 4x4 long bed V6. Whats the general consensus on newer Tacomas when it comes to

    1) Manifold and exhaust rust. Is any part of the Tacos system stainless steel? I live in the sunbelt so salt is not a problem but I just think its pretty chintz for a $34k truck to come with cast iron manifolds and galv pipes.

    2) The infamous differential whine. How serious a problem is this or is it just an annoyance?

    3) The transmission jumping around gears.....does the TSB programing patch really smooth this out?

I can't really say I hate my Canyon, in fact its a phenomenal truck when it comes to mpg...nearly 27mpg on summer blend gas if I keep it around 58mph on state roads. I just find myself wanting the Toyota and especially the longer bed.

There will be surface rust. You can’t avoid it.

I owned a tundra for 19 years, never had a rust issue anywhere as long as your religious about using fluid film every fall.
I even went one better imo, using cosmoline to coat the new tacoma's undercaridge.
As far as any differential howl, and transmission issues with my new truck?...nothing it runs quiet, and the transmission performs near perfect, much as the tundra did with the exception the taco has 2 od.'s

    1. I've never had stainless steel on any new vehicle I've ever bought. But also have not had rust problems that required replacement in the time I owned those vehicles.
    2. I have a 2019 SR5 and I've never heard this whine and have no strange noises.
    3. I drive mine how its supposed to be driven and I have no issues with the truck finding gears or constant downshifting.

I think all of these issues are blown out of proportion because you're on a forum dedicated strictly to one truck.

Just do an extended test drive. Each owners experience is different . Rent one of you can. That’s the only way to prevent having the dreaded buyers remorse .

Yeah $37k is more than I wanted to pay for a midsize truck but....mid life crisis. Plus the 6 ft beds are almost out of inventory everywhere. Prices on used Tacos are so high I figured WTH...in 10 years it will still be worth $22k since I only put 8k miles a year on my trucks. One thing I never noticed before....the Off Road doesnt have the faux hood scope...only the Sport.

Gonna be a long night tonight...

Problem with a test drive, depending on the vehicle... who's test drove it, or how many miles its got accumulated on it may not show really how good the truck/transmission performs for each operator. Took me well over a thousand miles before my truck went from a night to day difference.
