Old habits die hard. First and foremost a first aid kid suitable for everything from a splinter to a sucking chest wound. Two fire extinguishers (five minutes after you use your extinguisher you will need another, life just happens that way). Well stocked tool kit. Well stocked GHB (get home bag). And the most important part pioneer tools.

    Wow... Some really excellent suggestions.

Regarding socket sets, what should I be looking...Metric or SAE?

    Any particular sizing?

I’m not the most mechanically inclined guy and I don’t think I’ll be playing with a tranny anytime some, but I would like to be able to do the basics.

A folding shovel. I bought a cheap one at Walmart a few years ago and it has proven to be very useful.

I'm not gonna list what i carry because most people already listed it, but i will give you advice on picking what to carry. Carry items YOU will likely need for YOUR situation. I know they say you can never be too prepared, but you also dont wanna over do it and waste spce and weigh the truck down with unnecessary items. Best way to do it in my opinion is to start off with the most important items and work your way down. Whats the most likely situation do you think you will run into? Also consider putting all your gear inside the truck. Fortunately we have a lot of storage that are under and behind the rear seats, as well as the side pockets on all 4 doors. I carry a lot of stuff and i managed to fit everything inside those storage areas

In the canopy I've got a box for recovery straps/shackles/blocks/hitch pins etc. In the hardest to reach spot of the bed I keep a box for mechanical tools and tire repair. Easy access box reachable immediately has first aid, gloves, road flares and toilet paper. Shovel(s), folding saw, and gallons of water are my packing peanuts.

Behind the back seat I keep a first aid kit, and wool blanket, and under that a bottle of whiskey. Once I've tried everything else the emergency whiskey will cheer me up. Moral is important.
