Annoying 4-LO alarm

New 2016 Taco owner here. What's with the beeping?! Any way to disable this?

If 4 lo is beeping you haven't engaged it properly

 

Were you completely stopped, and in neutral (at least for MT, not sure on AT) when you tried to go in to 4-LO? Label on the visor and the owners manual should have the info you’re looking for.

 

If you engaged 4lo and it’s beeping, you aren’t actually in 4lo. While you’re in drive you can switch to 4hi, then switch to neutral and engage 4lo.

This. Slowly roll forward or backward until it engages.

 

Wrong x2. That is for 4hi. You HAVE to be in neutral for 4lo like @TX_Taco88 and @Farcedude said.

Shift into 4hi while you're still moving. If you need 4lo, stop, put it in neutral, then turn the dial to 4lo and it will engage without beeping. The lights on the dash will change, and 4lo will be solid there. Again, you should be stopped to engage 4lo.

You can engage and disengage 4hi at any speed, but should do so when the wheels aren't bound (so before you get hung up on a rock) and when you're going below 55mph. Shift into 4hi if you could even remotely need it - being in 4hi on a gravel road or snowy road won't damage the transfer case or drivetrain at all. I just wouldn't try to back into a parking space in 4hi.

You can be rolling in N while shifting into 4low like others are suggesting - but it's NOT what Toyota recommends. Even if it's in N, you're loading the transfer case at speed and you WILL break your transfer case if you're moving too fast.

My Tacoma did the same thing the other day. Usually 4LO goes right in with a solid light. I stop, apply the brakes, put the trans in neutral (I have an automatic) and then switch to 4LO. Well that day all I would get is the beeping and flashing light, multiple tries. I tried the same procedure WITHOUT applying the brakes and it went right into 4LO. Flat ground.
Next day it was back to normal. (Stopped,neutral and brakes applied).

 

Should point out that if you're in 2WD and want to go straight to 4L, things wont work for you like the manual suggests.... youll have to "roll" like people are suggesting here.... If youre in 4Hi, things are lined up already, stop.... neutral.... 4LO..... that simple.... its not rocket surgery

 

OK let me clarify myself, I put the truck in 4HI first-not straight from 2HI into 4LO.

 

Correct. It needs to engage into 4hi first. Once that is done go into neutral and switch to 4lo

 

In case anyone was wondering, you can do 75mph in 4hi on an interstate. Luckily I didnt break anything. Would not recommend.
