What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I don't mind it being tight, I built the sliders like that originally, too tight actually

But this is a bit ridiculous. There's like 1/2'' before the cab hits the mount at all due to the gap. It's really far off.

 

With the 1” how much did it actually provide?

I'll do a write up when I have a chance. This all started when I ordered the wrong instrument cluster bezel. I ordered one for a column shit truck. The slot was in the new bezel. The cluster it self has the holes for lights already in it. Took a little creative wiring on the back of the cluster.

 

Been some time since the last oration, so.....

ES has been screwing up 1st gen applications since time began including rack bushing kits.

The body kit for D cabs is significantly different (as you found out) than ex cabs and not all ex cabs are the same.

In the ES kit for my 99 ex cab, the mid and rear were identical. The OE were different in height by 1/8-3/16 or so, with different pt#s and markings.

They had some cracks that looked bad but didn't really go too deep.



The strange thing is there was no change in the pin stripe alignment, before or after.


I noticed no difference in "feel" but the cab no longer hit the front bumper, that's with a 9/16" or so gap. The completely worn out OE front allowed that much movement. Note the diameter of the sleeve vs the hole in the upper rubber. A pretty good pile of rubber "crumbs" fell out.
All that aside I'm happy. OE mounts are really pricey.

I was chatting with Brett about it and he came to the same conclusion that the double cab mounts are different. At least I could get 4 out of the 6 done. The rear ones were actually in the best shape out of all of them so didn't feel too terrible about putting them back in. Some day I'll cough up the money for some OEM rear ones though.

I have a pretty good idea how you wired it based on your photo. What type of bulb (T3 wedge I'm guessing?) and what "lens" did you use? I think it was @BartMaster1234 who created a custom lens with transparency film. Did you do something similar to that or did you get an off the shelf lens?

 

@BartMaster1234 help me design the lens. I made it the same way he did. The bulbs are colored led's. Don't remember the number right off.
The bottom light is for when the light bar is on. So one side of that bulb is grounded. The others have power to one side then a ground signal will turn those on.

 

I made the lens file in Photoshop for him and he built it the same way I did. Several layers of projector transperancy glued together with layers consisting of clear, black, data, and color filters.

 

Went to the junkyard. Found a damn near mint skid plate off a 4Runner for $15. Mine is completely rusted out. Also an O2 sensor (fingers crossed) for $7 and two valve covers for $22.

Really thinking about going back for the cylinder heads. They only charge $100 with cams or $70 each bare. I’ve got a cross threaded spark plug, figure I could get the heads and rebuild them. Perhaps with an LCE valve train kit.

Anyone have any experience with their valve kits? Preferably the ones with stronger springs

 

Hmm.. With a bit of care a guy could build a very stock looking clock that had some extra indications on it that way.

There's not really an option with gas.

There is plenty of wood to burn in the forest - at least in the unpopulated areas we seek out. (Shoot, even if you don't want to collect dead wood, plenty can be found in places that you don't have to pay for it).

Had the topper color matched. The shop that did it used 16 paint chips to dial in the color and metallic/texture. They did a great job matching 16 year old oxidized paint.

And impressive finish given the fact I bought it used off @JasonLee who seemingly took a cheese grater to the paint at one point

Next up:

1. Remove the bedside decals the previous owner put on. About 8” off the mark.

2. Mount tires to the newly painted 3rd gen T4R limited wheels and get these Broheim wheels/tires off.

 

1. I always carry some dry wood when I go truck camping.

2. Colorado is trying to prohibit that. To help prevent spreading of disease.

Went to Clovis today... Good news! The schrader valve was just loose and the hose on the top of the resi was a bit loose too. Tightened up. No need to rebuild. Held charge all the way home and is not leaking.

 

I’ve been gone awhile for sure. So long as you still have the green machine, it’s all good.

Taking the truck up to Linville Gorge tomorrow to wheel a trail, hike and do a little trout fishing.

Gave the truck it’s once a year oil change (put less than 5K miles on it since 07.2019) at 173,260 miles. Also lubed all 9 zerks on the driveshafts which took care of a vibration I’ve had for a bit.

 

Take that up with the dude in Highlands Ranch I got it from...

I took good care of it (after I popped the window out)!!!
