    New Tacoma experience today!

(2019 TRDPro with 6500 miles on it)

Drove up Cnty Rd 14A in Ouray, CO to a hiking trail. Crossed through several puddles (no real mud) en route. Climbed a straightforward dirt semi-improved dirt road in 2wd the whole way,.

At trailhead there was some mud. In order to park out of the way I slid it into 4Hi to get backed into the spot. Went on my hike (5.5miles and 3.5 hours later I returned)

Vehicle rear wheels would not rotate! Totally locked up! WTF? Tried switching between 2hi-4hi-4lo...No love. Tried "pumping" the hand break lever. Nothing. Put it into 2Hi and tried slipping the clutch to "bump" wheels loose. Right rear came loose. Left rear, NO Love!!

Put it into 4Lo, activated rear locker, slipped clutch...Clunk! and wheels were free...WTF?

I traded a 2008 Tacoma prerunner for this 2019 TRDPro. I've driven every major brand of 4wheel drive truck/SUV over the last 35 years...NEVER had anything like that happen...

Was this A) Mud/dirt in the ABS sensor? B) over heated breaks and mud/water heat stick issue? C) Something brought on by perfect combo of Muddy water/mud slipping wheels/ putting into 4Hi and reversing?

Any input...Other than "Learn how to drive dude" Would be appreciated.

    Cheers!!

Water gets in the drums happens a lot with 3rd gen owners. It'll dry out.

I have had similar things happen after a carwash. I suspect it is the rear drums getting stuck.

Mine usually happens in the garage. A quick rock of the truck frees them.

How does getting just water in the drums (unless it freezes) lock them up. I have had several vehicles with drums and have not experienced this.....

Seems crazy that some surface rust can't be overcome by 250+ HP.

My XJ is in mud/water every weekend and it's never had this issue. What's different about the rear drums on the Tacoma? My trucks too new, haven't even looked at them. :anonymous:

I’ve had this happen to my brakes in the winter. Leaving work there is one stop sign and inevitably when I go to stop, the brakes are locked up tighter than Alcatraz. Huge safety issue.

Flash rust on the mechanism. Drums are self energizing so the rust doesn't actually need to hold much force to lock them up.

Well that is not very good! I saw an interview with a Toyota engineer who was justifying the drums saying it keeps dirt, mud and rocks out while off roading and they last longer......not sure that outweighs the flash rust and locking up issues? Weird.

Wonder if some new brake shoes might help? Maybe the factory ones are more conducive to this for some reason.

Did you set the parking brake when the drums were muddy / wet before you went on your hike?
