Hello all, towing newbie here.... will appreciate your response.

I have a 2016 TRD OR with Tow Package. Does my set up include an "electric brake controller"? I ask because i am about to rent a trailer, and the owner is insisting that i have this. The trailer is a 2017 Keystone Springdale 189FLWE trailer, 21 feet.

It does not have the controller.

    I got this one

I also got the wiring harness to plug and play behind the driver kick panel. Though to find! But it is hiding behind there!

Having the tow package means Toyota pre-wired the controller harness but you still have to provide the actual brake controller unit & calibrate it once your trailer is hooked up. On a 21ft trailer, not using a brake controller would be a massive safety risk.

Towing package has been standard on all 2016-2020 Tacoma V6's in Canada. It was optional on 2016-2017 Tacoma V6's in the USA and standard on 2018-2020's. 4-Cylinder models do not have an available towing package.

As for how to tell if the vehicle has the towing package, there are a few ways. Other than just looking it up, you can tell physically on the truck in the following ways:

    1. Is it a V6? Only V6's had an available towing package.
    2. Does it have a factory hitch? Without experience you may or may not be able to tell, but for 2016+ Toyota only offers a hitch for the Tacoma from the factory, not as a dealer-installed accessory.
    3. Does it have the factory 4/7-pin connector in the bumper? It is possible that someone adds this when using an aftermarket hitch, but it's less likely.
    4. Does it have the 130A alternator with the part number 27060-0P350 on the label? Again it is possible someone swapped this out from the non-towing package 100A alternator.
    5. Does it have an engine oil cooler? This was posted earlier in the thread, and is only on trucks with the towing package.
    6. Does it have the power steering cooler? This is a section of finned tubing mounted near the bottom of the rad support. It is unlikely someone would add this to a truck.
    7. If it is an automatic, does it have the auxiliary air-liquid transmission cooler mounted in front of the radiator on the LH side? Many people add transmission coolers to their trucks, so look for a factory one with part number 32920-04040 printed on it. (Note: 2020 trucks produced from 03/2020 no longer have this external cooler, but only use the internal ATF cooler in the radiator). It is unlikely someone would have added the factory cooler to their truck, most prefer to go aftermarket for larger coolers at a lower cost.

TSC is a button inside the cab, it should be up on the headliner near the interior lights.
