Would either of these work? Note, I don't have an FCC license. Not sure what you are running but it will make it easier to communicate I'll grab one. Not going to keep it in the truck unless I'm doing trail stuff so looking for mobility/removability so it's not permanent.

Damn, October 2013. Didn't realize it was that long ago. Back when I had my first gen. That thing was so sweet. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/ne-area-wheeling-trip-plans.258758/page-99#post-7598872

Pictures start there, there's video of Rob getting pulled out a few posts later. Those first few pics are the hole Rob @mach1man001 got stuck in.

Basically Rob drove through a giant mud hole more suitable for a tractor or a hillbilly mud truck, made it about halfway, and got stuck. Then was pulled out by Eric @eborgie after sitting almost up to the door handles in mud for around 30 minutes. As a result a new interior was in order...

I don't have any experience with it, but for something that you'll never hard mount, I'd be looking purely at handhelds. Something like this: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Uniden-PRO401HH-40-Channel-Handheld-CB-Radio/42793874

It won't have all the range of a permanently mounted radio/antenna that's been tuned properly, but it should work sufficiently well for communicating on a trail ride.

On the GMRS side of the house, these are exactly what I've got: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Midland-LXT600VP3-26-mile-Range-2-way-Black/20532050

That cb is fine. I'd stay away from the handhelds. They heat up a ton on longer rides. Same with the radio / mic combos.

This is actually a good buy right now. It's normally $60. It has a gain adjustment and at $40has everything you need for a good price.

You could also just do a mag mount antenna if you don't want anything permanent

Of course, I'm not the guru, especially in this area. Take any recommendation from @m603holden with a lot more weight than my suggestions.

The handheld microphone combination was really awesome in concept but I found after using mine for more than an hour it would actually cook my hand

Remember how much fun my mag mount was? Mag mount is GREAT for temp highway use, but you are going to knock the thing off MANY branches. I don't have a better solution for you, but be aware of what you are getting into before you decide on quick and dirty installs.

I now just toss it on the hood. Fixed that problem pretty quick.

picking the right antenna would help. The firestick is great if it's not on a mag mount. Something a bit more floppy would have been a better choice for a mag mount.

GMRS can tune into FRS frequencies, not visa versa though (I have done so far 2 minutes of research). Look for a GMRS handheld, cover all your bases. Technically, yes you need an FCC license for GMRS. It's no test, 70 bucks for 10 years I think. BUT if you run the FRS frequencies you do not need a license. Just sort of a buy it once a smidge overkill and don't buy twice sort of thing.
