I'm in northern New England and it took me a couple of months to find a used F-150 2wd (which worked out fine for years up here). When I finally sold it, I gave up looking for a 2wd Taco after a few weeks. I figure I will get the extra $$ I spent on 4wd when/if I sell it.

    Local dealer here has 26 Taco's in stock....zero 2wd.

I'm sort of surprised the op wanted a 2wd also being up north. We had a 00 2wd taco in our shop that was used for some deliveries and erands. It was absolutely scary to drive in the winter on snowy roads being in nw connecticut. It even had to be towed on day after our driver went down too steep an icy driveway. If it had 4wd all this would have eliminated.

    Zoo,

I'm the OP and the one that doesn't want the 4WD.

Some background. I'm 83 years old and live about one mile from the south shore of Lake Ontario and our driveway is 700 foot long. And we get snow, sometimes a lot of it. I have never owned a 4WD. Yes, there have been times when it would have been great but not having that feature, I plan accordingly.

I do have studded snow tires on my '06 SR5 Access Cab Tacoma with the 2.7L 4 cylinder, 2WD and manual transmission and some extra weight in the back for additional traction. It helps a lot.

99.5% of the time, they are not needed, so yeah, plan accordingly.

And your delivery guy . . . "It was absolutely scary to drive in the winter on snowy roads being in nw connecticut. It even had to be towed on day after our driver went down too steep an icy driveway. If it had 4wd all this would have eliminated."

If he would have used good common sense, he could have avoided the situation. And there is no guarantee that would not have happened if he had 4WD. Just my opinion of course.

I talked with my dealer about ordering an SR5 with 2WD and 4 cylinder. Toyota won't do it for dealers up this way he said.

So, I ordered the SR with the SR Convenience package for $230 that has the Remote Keyless Entry.

Thanks Zoo, I appreciate your comments.

    Jolly

Can dealerships trade with other dealerships in other Toyota regions? I’m in the Gulf States and local dealer didn’t want to trade with a dealer in New Mexico

The key is right there ^^^^^
I grew up in northern New England and the only guys with 4wd 30 years ago were in the plow business. Most of us managed with Ford and Chevy sedans and Saabs. Lots of Saabs ;-)

People with long driveways usually had an old farm tractor to take care of the snow.

Now, it seems so strange to drive around in snow country with rear wheel drive only, but decades ago it was common. Most of us lived ;-)

You know what else was common? Plenty of weight in the back and getting out to push.

I second this. With all online listing sites, sometimes the pictures and descriptions are incorrect. If you find one you are interested in. You can enter the VIN here to get the info for the vehicle.

Best of luck on your search!

I am with you 100%. Back in the day, my old Saab would tackle any road with front wheel drive. I had a 2005 SR5 in 4WD and used to drive from New York to Gaspe, Quebec in the winter. Rolling slow, no breaks, sand bags in the back, studded snow tires for moderate conditions and chains if it was pretty scary. Never once used 4WD. But on the 401 -- forget it!

    :)

Point is you can do a ton with a 2WD if you now what you are doing. Now I have the TRD Off Road (4WD). You watch. I will get stuck all the time now because I will be less careful. :). It is like the back up camera. Never had one before and it was never a problem. Now I have one and I can't park for shite. :)

My hats off to you at 83....congrats ordering the new truck. Being 67 myself i would never feel comfortable enough with a 2wd pickup on icy/snowy roads, even with weight in the bed. I guess studded tires are a big plus, but imo, legally their a pita. When i went to quebec during the winters i saw many vehicles 2 and awd using studded tires on their roads.
