I've driven to Wyoming in the dead of winter... I know exactly what you mean.... Shit is different outside of "always sunny" California... We are spoiled, I know this lol

After rebuilding my FZJ80 and learning how things work. I let my car “warm up” until it sounds like it’s normal and ready to go. Takes time to get fluids into transmission and engine. My FZJ80 runs like a champ with 300k miles. Plan on treating my Tacoma with the same care. No, I’m not a boomer but I was raised by one.

When the temp drops below 0, I really wish I lived in California.

Depends on what I’m driving. If it’s my Taco probably about a minute which is how long it takes for me to put away my sun shield, figure-out what I’m going to listen to on the radio and buckle-up.

On my older cars (one of which has dual-carbs and no choke) I let it idle for a minute then for another 15 seconds while I sit in the driveway and let my garage door close.

Looks like you'v got plenty of answers already but its friday and I'm avoiding work.

I get in, start it. Put my seat belt on, plug my phone in, do whatever I have to do then take off. I drive pretty conservatively so never really think about mashing the gas and bouncing it off redline anyways but still get it up there to merge onto the highway.

The only time I will actually warm up the truck is during the winters. If there's no snow I just sit there and wait til the RPM's drop off the initial cold start and call it good. Otherwise it's idling anyways while I try to scrape or brush ice/snow.

Speaking of Hi quality liquid cooled engines, Allison, Roles-Royce, and others built very powerful V12 gas engines for the military for many years, and even back in the day ,they used synthetic oils. All manufacturers recommended warm up when possible some went so far as to have electric oil pumps, servos to circulate oil before cranking the engine. Cant help but wonder how long my engine would last if it were built like an Roles-Royce in a P51 like my grandfather flew in the second world war. When it absolutely, positively had to work right, and lives depended on it

I just get in turn the key, start it. Put on my seat belt and sun glasses if the weather calls for that, plug in phone and set radio station and go. In the winter I might let it idle a few minutes but nothing crazy. I was raised by boomers too but not warming up 10-20 minutes. That's wasteful

Haha! Same here in Wisconsin. I bought my 4runner new last January right before a cold snap. Two weeks old and it sounded like it had 200K at a cold start.

You know it's really cold when the needle starts creeping back down while you wait at a traffic light!

I wait until the idle speed drops, then go. I don't wind it up until it gets to operating temp.

So that lets your motor warm up, but then you move around and the tranny is still cold. What I do, since I live a few blocks from the road, is I turn it on and drive it slowly to the road. This gives the tranny and the engine time to warm up a bit. Then I just take off normally since it usually within the "correct range" that the temperature marks on the dashboard. Now, we have 85-90F morning down here. In the winter when its 50f in the morning I let it idle a little longer.

    Reserected from the dead.

When the truck starts, I sit long enough to have my morning cry. I start my day with my "fuck, I guess I gotta go to work now, cry".

Been there. I'm still waiting to blow out the hydraulic clutch in my car. 10 below or so, that clutch gets really stiff after driving down the highway.

@Vbpiper imagine being in that plain at 8000 feet when that engine failed because of improper warm up, that Roles-Merlin can make the ground come up pretty fast

In my old VW GTIs, I'd let them warm up a little by driving at relatively low speeds to get the turbos warmed up. In my Tacoma, I basically start it and go.
