I wanted a Tacoma for many years, but previously purchased a 2004 Tundra when out Tacoma shopping because it was such a great deal for an amazingly clean, garaged, low mile (40k) truck. I loved that truck, but sold it at 140k miles. I was on the hunt for a used Tacoma but ran into the same issue as the first time. They just hold their value! So, I ended up buying a brand new 2018 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab SR 4x4 (SR trim kept me closer to the price of the used trucks I was looking at) on December 31st, 2017.

Unfortunately it racks up most of the mileage (highway) commuting to and from work, but I love to get it in the dirt any chance I get. It will just barely haul my kayaks, but it does it, mountain bikes fit pretty well in the back, and the bed is just barely big enough to hold our camping gear. The Tundra's bed size was a major advantage and the interior space and comfort was far above what the Tacoma has. The turning radius and maneuverability of the Tacoma are what sold me. (and the radar cruise control on my commute)

Here's an inventory of the upgrades/changes/mods I've done to date:

I’d recommend a hitch/bed extender for your kayaks. T-Bone and Yakima are some pretty good brands.
