2017 Tacoma dying at 177k miles

Trade it or sell it to somebody that wants to take the time to fix it...I'm with you...you bought it to work, worked it hard, once it give you trouble, move it down the line and get another one...who has time to deal with a less than reliable vehicle...I know I don't. Oh I like working on old trucks and usually have an old jeep or two around, but I won't have a daily driver or work vehicle that I have to work on...If its not an easy relatively inexpensive fix...trading it in first chance I get and moving along....

I never really care with dealers, I mean they go over them with a fine tooth comb and certify that they are A-OK...and figure that they know more about buying a car than anyone so there is really no need.....I'd probably tell a private buyer that she leaks a little...

Who the hell would retorque a timing cover just randomly?

 

If I did that much driving, I'd do the same.

 

Someone who spent a lifetime periodically retorgueing things, because he knows what happens if you don't. Someone who knows that once the first drop of oil escapes a channel for more is formed that cannot be squeezed off and fixed by all the torque in the world. And if you retorque randomly you miss some nuts and bolts, so you don't do it randomly. You do it with organization, and purpose. Never met a self-torqueing timing cover fastener. Today's youth never heard of opening the hood and doing some PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE. In this instant gratification world we live in today what has been set aside is the responsibility to take care of your vehicle. Seems though, and I include my daughters, most people think you buy a car and you have no RESPONSIBILITY to make sure this kind of problem doesn't happen. It just does it itself. Sure, cars have come a long way. But not that far: put another 40 degrees on that nut!

I'm assuming u don't know what causes the timing corver leak? *Hint* it's not fastener torque. If bolts are randomly coming lose all over the place, you're doing something wrong Gramps. Owned an accord with 250k on it now. Everything from Serpentine belts to balance shafts in the engine to valve adjustment. Never met a bolt I touched that was loose. Are u routinely finding loose bolts???

Well so far on my 2016 OR M/T I've racked up 154k and I have been extremely rough on this pickup, I've done alot of offroading and freeway driving across 26 different states since I purchased this pickup new in March of 16 and I can honestly say I haven't had any problems. I've changed all fluids 2 times now, plugs once, brake pads once and on my 3rd set of tires. And the only leak I'm getting now is a small one from my ps vane pump somewhere but now it's stopped leaking so I plan on trying to locate that if I can, I hope it's still leaking just enough to find the problem. But all in all my 16 drives as well as it did when brand new, im definitely glad I opted for the M/T because I knew how many miles I'd put on and that I will never sell this pickup. But when I get the timing cover leak I will 100% be fixing this my self in my shop, definitely have never and will never let a dealer touch my truck. But this is just my experience so far and my 2 cents. Good luck op!

 

$35k for 1.2 years of warranty based on his mileage?

 

So I was just scrolling through the service manual and just figured I'd look into removing the timing chain cover. I mean its definitely technical and will take some time but definitely do able if you have the time and tools and space to do it in and will save you alotttt of $ if you do yourself. Including pics just for fun.

 

I called my local dealership. I asked them to include a timing chain replace and new water pump while in there, in addition to the timing cover gasket. They quoted me $4,020,156.00.

 

At 4 million dollars I might start thinking about trading in

 

I’d hope you changed the oil more than twice in 150k miles lol
