2002 F350 7.3. I purchased the truck to haul my cargo/camping trailer and the toys. It was an awesome truck other than being a nightmare to park and just a chore to drive everyday. I loved the truck but came to realize it was too much but kept it because of the trailer. Then I sold the trailer and most of the toys and moved closer to work where my commute went from 30 miles each way to 4. Truck wouldn't even get warm in the winter by the time I got to work. Decided to sell it private party and sold it for more than I paid 2 years prior. I do miss the power though...

Didn't trade anything. I planned to sell my 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD Limited myself but last Sunday evening it was in a minor accident with an unlicensed driver that turned left into me while I was on a camping trip. I just got the new Tacoma on Wednesday. So now I'm just waiting for insurance and the body shop to fix him up again. IMG_20200724_161732_01.jpg IMG_20200726_215011.jpg

Exactly. My lift and bumper never got me out of anything, but they did destroy my gas mileage and CV's. I used to only do weekend trips at a State Forest a couple hours away with that truck. Now I've gone as far as Tennessee and Maine from SE PA to get into the wilderness, and over the road comfort and efficiency suddenly became very important. I also realized I'm more interested in experiencing the wilderness than hardcore offroading.

13 Hyundai Sonata 2.4l with the infamous Theta II seizing/burning engine. I was sick of not being able to carry stuff for various home projects and it was getting up there in miles. Took impeccable care of that thing and got 1/4 of original purchase price toward the Taco. Don't get me wrong, it was a fantastic car in terms of responsiveness, reliability, mpg... etc. I enjoy the Taco way more though so far.

My youngest brother has one of those the exact same color and the same oil burning issue too. It's a nice roomy car but unfortunately he bought it used, financed it and it's not paid off quite yet. He also used it for a food sales job and piled on the miles. Now sadly he is laid off due to the CV. He was trying to talk his wife in to getting my Jeep, she won't allow it so far.

1999 Toyota 4Runner SR5 w/ 200k. I offered it to the dealership but they only wanted to give me $5k for it. Put it up with a “For Sale” sign on the street corner near my place and got $9k for it inside of 24 hours.

Ended up picking up a 2019 TRD OR w/ the premium tech package. I really didn’t want to sell the Runner, that baby was by far the most reliable vehicle I’d ever owned. I only sold the Runner because my employer offered me a $1000/mo vehicle allowance and the vehicle had to be 4 years old or newer. Twist my arm haha

Mine wasn't burning yet but it was a ticking time bomb. Absolutely nothing wrong when I traded it in but once it starts, there's nothing you can do to stop/slow down. Dealers can do a consumption test and then clear you to get a new short block. Based on findings from guys who have torn that engine down, its lack of lubrication due to oil starvation (mainly caused by oil burning) and interior cylinders getting nice and hot - so it self destructs.

Either way, poor design from pure GDI perspective but you get a lifetime engine replacement at least. We have a 14 Santa Fe Sport with the same engine and same concerns. Glad you were able to finally get a Taco.

His is out of the warranty I think I'm not sure what he has done with it to get it fixed. I know he took it to an independent mechanic that's reputable who told him that. I think it has over 165k on it now, I could be wrong about that. I thought the power train warranty on those cars was 100k. Im pretty sure he is just filling the gas and oil until he car get rid of it. The good thing is it sees few miles now.

I'm definitely glad to have the hopefully if I care for it well like I have other cars it will last 10-15 years with little trouble.

Have him check with dealer. People claiming they're getting engines replaced way past warranty (if failed due to bearing issue). The class action that is getting settled extends it to unlimited miles and no owner restriction. Sorry to be thread-pooping with this but I would encourage him to pop over to the Hyundai-forums for some good (and bad) info and talk to the dealer. Good luck to him; maybe he'll get lucky and get a replacement short block.

I will definitely mention it and probably show him this. It's definitely worth looking into. And if getting a new block keeps a car running for someone not in the best place to unload it for something better then oh well so what if we hijacked the thread a little.

Spent several years working at a motorcycle dealership and learned from our techs how important it was to have good info so I try to pay attention. Oddly it would always do it twice then on the third try it would activate the cruise then rapidly accelerate making me brake. Dealership had it back multiple times but could never duplicate the issue. They sprayed under the hood, they had me leave it overnight when rain was forecast. Finally the last time it was in for the issue they still couldn't get it to do it. It had rained and temps were in the range where it would occur. I left with it and as soon as I got on interstate I tried the cruise. Horn blew just like I'd been telling them so I hopped off next exit and went back to the dealership. I left truck running with door hanging open and went in and told service manager to come with me. Went out to truck and drove off, hit cruise button and horn blew just like I've been telling them. His eyes got the size of dinner plates and he told me they'd be giving me a loaner car. Got my truck back a few days later and while he claimed they found nothing and did nothing that was the last time it ever happened.

Yeah back window down and sunroof open, I loved mine too. Thirteen years I had that truck and not one problem. I wanted to down size so I went back to my first love, the Tacoma. I also have a 96 Tacoma Extended Cab 2.7 4 x 4, that I bought used in 1998 with 36K on it. In 2014 the head gasket blew at 408K. I hope this third gen can follow in it's tracks.

I tried trading an '08 Subaru Outback that had over 200k miles, rust blossoming all over and was leaking oil profusely from the head gaskets. The sales person just smirked. I ended up giving the Outback to my son for him to build a decent car from it and his other Outbacks.
