I never had to look at that. I always have mixed it with other wood.
    Good point.

I've got enough variety in the pile that it shouldn't be an issue. Normally I'd let it season for year first but it had already been dead standing for about that long and the saw was spitting dust rather than chips while I was cutting it up, so it's going straight into the woodshed.

All of our ash trees are dying. Ash borer is killing them. Can you safely store and burn the wood with those little buggers still around?

Yeah, but don't move the firewood to a new location where there aren't any borers. Burning the wood will keep them from spreading as quickly as just leaving it to rot, but not if you move it across the county into virgin territory first.

Thanks. They're all dying around here so it wouldn't much matter, but I was thinking about what to do with the trees on my property and the neighbors' properties.

Should be able to cut and burn them without causing any problems. Apparently this is a good time to do it, too.

"...EAB survival was lowest for the firewood that was cut early during larval development (July and August), compared to later months (September – December). EAB survival was lower in split logs compared to whole logs..."

Man this thread reminds me that I need to start getting some wood piled in for winter. Just can't get in the firewood mood when its been mid and upper 90s with heat index over a 100 the last few weeks. I was hoping to find some logs and process my own but that aint gonna happen this year, just have to roll the dice and gamble on buying again.

Was 88 here yesterday. Hotter in the woodshed, with the clear roof I've got on it. Drank a LOT of water and I'm still dehydrated today.

I should be used to the heat but it’s killed me this year. My office is about 85 today with a little portable ac running, when I’m not in there there I’m outside in full sun on concrete. Then to home and work in my garden in full sun til dark. So I’ll gladly pay someone again this year for 2-3 cords and have it dumped. I’m on the wait list from a pallet company for 4x6x18 blocks from of hardwood, got a dump truck load for a couple hundred a few years back.

This summer has made me so glad I got all my wood split and stacked by March. I hate being hot, if it never got above 75°F I'd be happy.

I was still emptying the shed in March; definitely too early to start filling it again

    Done!

Interesting discovery: Some of the Maple that was at the bottom of the pile apparently developed some fungus between the bark and the wood that produces Foxfire. I went out to put the birds away Saturday night and noticed some glowing pieces in the woodshed. Unfortunately, it's too faint for my phone to pick up; I took like 20 pictures with different settings trying to capture it but without any luck.

I just now found this thread.

New log splitter. Got about 2 hours more to operate before I change oil as required for break in time.

I got four of these crates I use for wood storage up against house for my wood supply during burning season, about 1 cord or so.
I take all my unused wood and return it out back . Don’t want it next to my house.

my old Ben Franklin stove that came with the house 1970’s. Not nearly as efficient as those I’ve seen posted, but at 1500 square feet she does the job .I’ve been looking into a Russo or Pacific Energy stove. I burn about 2 cords yearly . I burn as much as possible to conserve my heating oil.

I helped the son in law buck up 16 cords of great hardwood over the last three mornings, before it got too hot. We have 5 saws between us. Stihl 038 super pro, 12inch stihl electric, Echo 680, Husky 365 special, Husky 365. The stihl and special are the go to saws, and the oldest. All with 24 inch bars.

The electric is lightweight for marking (with a magnetic stick attachment). The 038 was a bitch to start, so didn't get much use over the last 40 years. I did a carb job, intake manifold boot and impulse line replacement. It's a bear. The 365 is 10 years old and my favorite. The Echo and new Husky are ok, but suffer from emission power syndrome...newer saw = less power it seems, at least compared to the 2 older saws.

Nice thing about 4 saws of almost equal capability is: cut, cut cut, grab another saw and continue. we never even stop to gas up unless we've worn ourselves out and need a break. Sharpening I do at home afterward with a Pfred 2 in one sharpener (also sold by stihl). They are the best for speed and repeatability of sharpening.

I own 3 Stihl items. They are all a bitch to start. Lesson 1 never ever touch the primer bulb. I threw out the wool air filter on the leaf blower and replaced it with a piece of oiled foam rubber; couldn’t start it at all until I did that.

Yeah, they're applied correctly. Don't shed rain very well otherwise
