Welcome to TW! The 4.0 seems solid and the 3.5 hasn't been out long enough to really tell.

    2.7 is probably more durable.
The 4.0 is probably the best for Off Road. Even better if you get one with ATRAC.

3.5 will do just fine. I just like the 4.0 a bit better.

    Yes, it can.
But it won’t be an enjoyable experience.
Use your gears, you’ll get there.........eventually.

    I’m not downing the 2.7.
It’s probably the best truck there is for woods and hunting.
Single Cab / 4WD / 2.7 - Is light weight and has a short turn radius.

Yes it can, I've done it. It's basically slow as a tractor and stick below 55mph. If you gonna tow at all more than 1500, go with the v6.

All I want to tow it's my rzr 1000 its 2100lbs and the trailer its 900 to 1000lbs. So let's say all together its 3500lbs. I love the 4 cylinder its simple durable and reliable. But if cant tow that weight I think I'm going to trade it with i6 dodge ram 2500 5.9 diesel or 1995 f150 with the 4.9 gas.

Yeah, that's a lot of weight for the 2.7. I would do it, but I'm a nut. The v6 Tacoma would be perfect. But between your two options both get terrible mpg, so I'd go ford. My family has had good luck, but I've also heard nice things a about the 5.9. but remember all of those will have 20 year old truck problems.

    Valid opinion.

Remember, this is a Toyota forum. We mostly have experience with the engine we have, and are a bit biased. I usually just say the more simple the tougher, but doesn't mean it's not more reliable or better overall.

I would love a 4.0 in my reg cab.
