Just upgraded to 34s from 33s and I can say this...c load 34s are much lighter and truck feels way better than with e load 33s.

Put on 33's and see how much you scrape, if a lot, 35's.

These trucks stock gears and with 33”+ tires don’t like to go above 60 mph otherwise your mpgs just get destroyed.
I’m impressed nonetheless and also the fact you can get your truck to stay in 6th

What kind of tires/wheels do you have? I think that plus how tall you are definitely affects how much power it takes to keep you rolling.

I may jump to 35's in the future, but currently i'm running 33's on 5.29's with about 300lb of extra weight. it certainly doesn't suck as i've read others comment. truck drives amazing with gears and tires and has awesome off road capability. I'm set up if i want to make the jump but the only thing holding me back is where i'm going to fit my full size spare. i don't want a swing out or to put it in my bed and i don't think it will fit underneath where my 285 currently sits.

Some 33s measure 33". Some more, some less. Same with every other tire size. There are differences, sometimes quite a bit, between different tires of the same size. I run 255/85, which should come in a touch taller than 33" at 33.07, 255/80r17 would be 33.06. I don't personally know anyone that has a 33x12.50s on a Tacoma. Most run 285/75r16 which spec to 32.83 or 285/70r17 which spec to 32.71. Again, some tires will be above and some below that spec size. There are no hard numbers in tires. Running 35s has benefits though. Lower rolling resistance over obstacles and an additional inch of ground clearance. But it takes effort to get them to fit also.

    Yeah absolutely agree
    I was running 285/70/17 KO2s E - Rated (SCS Ray 10 wheels) -- averaged around 14-15
Switched recently to 285/75/17 Yokohama G003 MT (SCS Ray 10) - Dropped to about 13-14 mpgs

we both run a soft topper setup, maybe this just means i need to get a new bumper to improve mpgs right..... or just an excuse to get one haha

Yeah those yokohamas are pretty heavy, but you still have less unsprung weight because your wheels are lighter too. I think my tires are 57 pounds and wheels are 28 pounds each. I think I just have a lighter right foot :D

How many miles do you have? I remember my mpgs were crappy the first like 5-8k miles and then they got a lot better. The first winter I had my truck, I was getting like 13mpgs stock.

What sucked about 5.29 with 33s in a light truck? I imagine the acceleration was great on-road but at the expense of high cruising RPM. Genuinely curious to hear more.

I had 529s, on 255 85s with armor and I hated it. It felt way over geared

I was always thinking if going 35's until I found out all the rubbing issues. My first Tacoma and had no idea. My older Ranger fits 35's easily with a lift and no rubbing. Big wheel wells I guess. Just decided to only go 32's on the Tacoma and I can live with it. 35's and 37's do look great tho.

Couldnt agree more. My truck is a toy and I dont mind an hour drive in it without regearing but yeah it's not exactly efficient anymore.

Im on skinny 33’s with a 2” lift, generally an empty truck too. Empty, stock AT gearing as fine but rarely gets out of 5th gear as 6th is way too tall at any reasonable highway speeds in Alaska. I generally keep it at 65-70mph.

But When I’m pulling our camping trailer, I want 4.88’s...

edit - I’m getting about 19mpg Highway, 16mpg in town.
