    The rebuild made things worse, putting it back together with stock parts wasn't even as good as before, I ordered a Reman pump from Amazon which is still OOS.., and finally picked up a used pump from a junkyard which works fantastically. I added an inline filter on the return line to the resi while I was at it.

    What's OOS?
    Am now considering ordering a remanufactured pump vs junkyard ( seeing as there's less guarantee or knowledge oh mileage).
    If anyone else watching this thread as any good or bad experience with remanufactred pumps, please chime in.

    Something with the fitment is off. I have a 2007 4.0L and when my pump went I bought one from a wrecked 2015 which was not bolt on. I had to grind down the casting on the pump in one area and IIRC also drill out a mounting hole. No big deal but not truly a bolt on fit

    Jeff, they were very much discontinued at the time I did the post. I tried desperately to obtain them. I may have even posted images of several dealer parts catalogs to show the issue. Just like the LCAs were gone for awhile. Apparently ToyMoCo brought the parts back to life sometime following my post.

    I don't doubt that you were having trouble acquiring one, but from my experience it seems more likely they were having supply issues and/or there was some sort of a stop-sales code applied. Either way, there is stock available for all of them now.

    There, got done screwing around. My trusty mechanic put a used one in from junk yard. Couldn't be happier. (Kept the original to see how complex it is to change out o rings.)

    I just re did my Power steering pump pulley due to denting it in an accident, I don't think I did any damage to the pump so I just bought a new pulley.

    I removed the four back bolts, removed the tiny c ring holding the pulley in. Slide the old one out and slide the new in.

    That C ring was the biggest pain. I had my dad help me. I used two picks to widen it and he took another pick and helped me gently lift it up out of that groove. Getting it back it was much easier getting it into place.

    Reading this guide I should have probably used some ATF to lube the shaft, I may do that before I reinstall it.

    Thanks for responses, finished it up not too long ago. Very easy but I did break the sensor on the bump so that was a nice $50 I didn’t want to spend.
    Ended up taking the back plate off and used a small pick to remove the c ring

    Is there a difference between rebuild and replace?
    Is rebuild only for external leaks?
    I know in general, external leaking means a failed seal, that replacing said seal fixes.

    However, what about other typical problems that eventually happen with P/S pumps?

    In my case, I recently noticed a rotational noise from my front engine area that changes with engine RPM, or steering input. I suspect the pump is the culprit, given I have already replaced the idler pulleys.
    At this point, the pump has lots of miles and age. On any other car I've had previously, they've generally gone bad earlier.

    I want to rebuild it to save money, but fear that won't fix it.
    Not only is it not leaking externally, but the type of noise to me does not sound like anything to do with rubber O-rings, and it appears these kits basically only come with that

    meaning no internal metal components that can wear over time are getting replaced with the "rebuild kit"
    unlike a 1st gen (maybe different pump) thread I saw, where a guy bought a $20 bearing for extra that looks to go inside his pump, which at least means an actual metal internal component got replaced. More than simply O-rings, whose purpose is likely to just keep fluid inside.

    Anything that spins and is metal can wear, whether that be a bearing, or the metal part inside the pump whatever it's called; I think rotor and vanes.
    Wondering if it would not actually fix the current issue to do the seal kit, and if it's better to put a whole pump

    I know this is how it works with other vehicle vacuum pumps. Same thing. Shop gives customer the option of hey, we can try throwing seal kit at it, it's cheaper but small chance to fix it, versus costlier entire vac pump replace with 100% success rate.

    google seems to suggest that there may exist, although hard to find
    more parts (and metal) that can be replaced within the P/S pump, beyond a trailmix bag of o-rings

    whatever spins inside the pump, that there has to be because it spins, and vanes providing sealing friction in order to pump, probably wears over time. Not to mention whatever keeps the pulley centered, if there is a bearing. Which, a seal kit does not appear to have any of.

    Toyota, like any mfg, seems to find what works for them, then keep doing it
    I've not yet figured out 2g setup, but take for example this pic from an 80 series (whose tech Toyota might still be using)
    and it has a bearing

    RockAuto lists $80-200 but only brands I've never heard of

    I imagine there is at least one bearing in the pump, possibly hidden behind the seal and pressed into the housing

    technically, any old bearing removed likely can have measurements taken, to determine a replacement
    that adds downtime to do that and order, versus total pump replace

    seems like OEM option would be Denso, dealer, new $300

    if you do it yourself the seal kit is worth a shot, I don't remember a bearing in mine (its been a while), but it solved my very bad PS leak, and the noises that would come with having low fluid. if not diy I wouldn't risk it

    If new OEM is available now for $300 I’d go that route for sure. When I had to replace my pump, that wasn’t an option unfortunately, so I went with a low mileage junkyard unit.
