l had manuals in my 1988 VW Fox, in my 1990 and 1993 5 litre Mustsngs, and in my 2005 and 2008 Chevy Cobalts.
But, the long distance driving in Toronto rush hour(s) traffic, killed my left knee.
l do miss it now that I'm retired though.

My very first car was a 1963 Coronet with a 4sp, small block V-8. Until I purchased my 2015 Tacoma Sport, there was never a time that I didn't have a vehicle with a manual transmission in my garage, for all the reasons already listed. Unfortunately, the ravages of time, a lifetime of accumulated injuries......athletic, combat, active lifestyle, and just old age, eventually get to some of us. At my house, all automatics....RIP manual transmissions.

As I mentioned before - my first manual was a 1979 Subaru Brat. I was then 16 delivering papers nightly (car route) in Lakewood WA. I went from a 1976 AMC Pacer (a real babe magnet). I've had about 30 vehicles since then including a number of Z's and a Corvette. Anyway, day one I must have killed that Brat a hundred times trying to negotiate paper tubes, shifter, steering and such. Thank god for being able to "pop the clutch" to start it since I killed the battery as well. By the 3rd day I was an expert.

I haven't tried this but has anyone started their truck by rolling and "popping the clutch" to start the truck? I keep meaning to try it....

I pop my clutch when rolling down the driveway in reverse sometimes when I'm feeling lazy... turning that key can take so much effort!

    Working on that
I felt the same way about the “skillset” of reading a watch. I got all my kids analogues as their first watch because I could see where things were heading with digitals. Now I have grandkids who don’t know how to read an analogue watch.
As for MT’s....that’s all I’ll ever have, as long as I can still get ‘em.

Grew up in the land of no hills Midwest. Dad had an old ranger with a finicky starter, guess who had the duty of pushing the truck to a roll for him to pop the clutch!

Dad had a 1960ish VB Beetle. Imagine as a teenage in Junior High and having to push that damn thing past your friends house so he could get it to start. I feel your pain....

I caved and grabbed my 99 4Runner in an Auto (because I found it for $3,500) but I wish I would have waited and paid whatever for a 5 speed.
Wife drives my Pickup most days but I steal it back when I want to be in control of a vehicle and go for a quick spin or errand.
I wish the first gen Tundra V8 and 4th Gen 4Runner V8 had manuals.
I’d have one of each within the month ha.

I haven't owned an automatic transmission vehicle in ~30 yrs. But as AT design technology has advanced, manual transmissions have retreated in sales and popularity. MT sales have dropped about a percent every year over the last 10-15 years. If I was in stop and go traffic every day, a MT would get old very fast. Since I'm not, I enjoy driving one, especially a 6 speed MT Evo. Other than "I like it", the only valid reason to justify a MT today is if there is a cost savings vs the AT. For performance cars, dual clutch autos are faster than a MT around a race track.

I worked with a guy that bought a used first gen Tundra with the V6 and MT; it was fairly new at that time, 12? yrs ago. He said it was totally underpowered and got ~17 MPG; he sold it in a few months.

Yes, a MT is less than an Auto.

A little of this and a little of that.
Being able to drive a manual transmission vehicle is a life skill.

Similar to being able to ride a bicycle and knowing how to swim.

    Essential.
