Got the appointment for 4.88's, was talked out of doing REM polishing hopefully thats not a mistake. Installer says I need to do 5 heat cycles, then I can drive the freeway and drain fluid at 500miles, does that sound about right? Read in this thread that some did heat cycles till 500 miles with no freeway driving.

Curious about this as well, seems like 3 heat cycles is what I hear most commonly mentioned. I'd think the more the merrier.

I set aside the day to do as many heat cycles as possible (working from home that day so might as well), next day I have a 300 mile trek to a job site so it hope that break in cycle is accurate. Might swap to Amsoil at the 500mile mark for added protection.

Question for y'all... I'm running Nitro 4.88s and the 80W-140 lube provided. I'm getting ready to do another diff fluid change and am wondering if I should stay with the 80W-140 or switch to something lighter weight. Recently moved from MN to TX so the truck is now a warm climate vehicle.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Can someone provide parts numbers for the front pinion seal, rear 8.75 pinion seal and is there anything else needed as far a seals or parts go I should get before I do the gear swap next week? Any seals needed when pulling the ADD apart? I saw a post a while back for the seal part numbers and electrical connector for the rear locker it can’t seem to find them.

I wouldn’t use lighter oil. The heavier oil provides better protection in warm climates and reduces noise from gears and bearings.

Just got my 4.88 gears installed, what a difference. My truck feels like it drives effortlessly now. I have never been in 5th or 6th gear driving around town, and just touching the gas slightly makes the truck move again. 5.29s I think would been too much gear for my style of driving.

Hey guys. Had some 4.88’s put in and man does the truck drive better. I have the option to pay 10% of the regear cost to get a 3 year no questions asked warranty on the gears. Anybody had any problems with them? Trying to decide if it’s worth it.

What gears went in? Did you see the pattern? Did they need or use all new bearings! Do you know the backlash and preload they ended up having? what is 10% and does the warranty include if you were to burn up the gears by not breaking them incorrectly? More than likely if you’re going to have a issue it will show up sooner than later like when you change the oil after the break in period.

Nitro gears went in. Used a master install kit. I get a 90 day warranty on the labor so that would include the break in period. I would be paying $270 for a 3 year warranty on the gears. Good to know issues more likely appear in the break in period. Thanks for the reply.

I mean $270 isn’t bad but it’s got me thinking like an extended warranty from the dealer. More than likely you won’t use it. If the shop is know for clean gear installs and the oil and drain plugs don’t have excessive metal, I’d say skip it. I thankfully got to watch my gears get installed so I knew what the numbers were and I’m not at all worried about them. I would also do the break in exactly as they say and do it as quick as possible to see what it looks like.

    Hey TWTaco,
I'm having Martin do my gears on the 5th. I just wanted some feedback on how your gears are holding up. Any noise or issues? I appreciate it
