New transmission cooler

Hello,

I just installed a Derale transmission cooler in my 2015 Tacoma (replaced the tiny stock one).

is it safe to drive it without adding extra fluid to account for the larger cooler? It might be a week or two before I can get in for a full flush.

 

Just add a new quart (easy) and then do the temp check level procedure. It will dump the excess And put you right where you need to be....

 

I sure wouldnt. Figure out the volume of your new cooler and then add that much fluid (plus a bit to account for whatever you spilled)

Then follow the procedure in the 1st post of this thread to reach the correct level.

I did the same, however I kept the original trans cooler. Oh yes... you must account for the extra quart added ... just do the simply procedure to ensure you have the level correct. And that is, with the temp around 110 F, unplug the level indicator screw, the fill from the top until the fluid comes to a trickle.. do this until you can do the flush ..
Don't run it low..

 

Ok, I put a quart in and then ran the procedure to drain to the proper level.

@Steevoreeno -- I have a couple of questions on the tranny cooler. I'm assuming you had the tow package already. Did the

$185 Derale 52506 25 Row Core Stacked Plate Cooler Kit , Black

Derale 52506 cooler fit where the original cooler was, or did you have to relocate? Also, is it plug and play with the stock tranny fluid lines or did you need some additional hardware? And, any pics of the finished install?

Yes my truck has the tow package. I removed the original cooler, moved the horns over to the passenger side and installed the new cooler generally where the old one was.

The plumbing is plug and play, but that’s about it. I used custom made brackets cut from aluminum on a water jet that ended up being more expensive than I had hoped. The pattern came from a friend on another forum (since it’s not my design I wouldn’t be able to share it).

Install seems pretty straight forward. I like that you only have to move the horns because I have an electric fan mounted on the PS and was hoping not to move it. Yeah, those brackets are awesome. Doing some googling, I see where Derale sells mounting brackets. I know they don't come close to what you have, but are the Derale brackets really that cheesy?

And, from your original post on adding tranny fluid, how much did you add?

From your post, your friend has the plans to the brackets and not brackets for sell, correct?

I added one quart of fluid, warmed it up to temp and then drained a little back out to get it at the right level. Ive got 56k on my truck so I’ll plan to flush the whole thing soon. I’ll do it myself now that I know how to.

I hesitated to show the after-install photo because I knew there would be interest in the brackets. I don’t know what he’s going to do, but I’ll tell you that unless he has free access to a water jet, or plans to produce in large quantity, they’re expensive to get made individually.

 

How expensive? A $50 filet mignon at Ruth’s Chris steak house is doable. A $250 bottle of wine to go along with it is not.

I also installed a fan indicator light for when the thermocouple activated the switch at 175F. Also put a switch to turn on manually.
