I wouldn't go alone. And you're not gonna like the switchbacks.

You'll be fine. Done it several times. 2nd gens are tight but it's not bad. Not going alone is sound advice but it's not that bad. I'd do solo.

Not bad. Nice job. There are 3 off-road clubs that could have saved you the long trip though that are very familiar with the area and trail. Just an FYI for next time ha

Went up to South Meadow Creek lake, the roughly 9 miles to the mine was pretty smooth and easy, couple rough or eroded spots but nothing much. The last 2 was much rougher with very few places to pass. The section through the avalanche field was very legit, hit the rear locker just in case through there. The lake is amazing though and there’s some killer views along the way. Going to go back and check out that ridge spur to the north with the other mine areas some time soon. Hey guys, my front diff started leaking from the drivers side, so I figured why not put the ecgs bushing in since it's right there. Anybody know of any shops who have experience with putting one in? Preferably around butte, but I dont mind driving an hour or two to bozeman, helena, or anywhere else.

I had Master Technician in Missoula put mine in, no complaints. I've had them do a few other things over the years, they've always been honest and charged what I thought were fair prices.

Well I had a blast at pipe stone today, well more extreme anxiety than a blast, but listening to what others had to say made me feel better. Went off to trail 8695 I think, goes to whitetail reservoir. I turned off onto another trail towards lake delmoe though, as I thought it would take too long to get to the reservoir. Anyway, followed the trail to and around the lake, then all the way up to an old broken down mining area and there was a CD sign, I assume for continental divide. The trail was already terrible the whole way up, but right after the mine it became impossible. Half the trail fell out to the hill, and just after that the ditch got deep and the rocks got higher. On my way back after turning around I talked to a guy parked on the lake with a 4 runner and he said he busted a coil just getting there. I told him there was no way in hell he was getting through the rest of the trail, as he thought maybe it just followed the lake, which is what I thought. I kept backtracking until I got to a T and decided to go right instead of left (I'll try to update with trail numbers) and ended up at a locked gate next to private property. Talked to a guy on an ATV who said the guy that lives out there might have a key, and I didn't want to backtrack so badly I walked the private property trail to a house. The guy with the ATV was beyond impressed, he thought the trails were only for dirt bikes said "well you got the right vehicle for the job." Anyhow I figured I'd roll the dice being shot for trespassing or meeting nice people. Luckily the folks who live out there are super nice and gave me a ride back to the gate and unlocked it for me. On the ride to the gate he stopped the vehicle and looked at me funny after I told him I'd made it up to the mine. He was even more impressed when he saw I was stock height on 265/75s. When I finally got to paved road at the end of pipe stone to air up, a trailer pulled up and asked how the hell I got to the other side of the lake. They saw me from the parking lot or a campsite I guess, but a minute later people in a jeep pulled up to ask the same thing. They said going up to whitetail was a 6 hour round trip, so I'm glad I didnt go for that. They also said they were bashing on trees a good portion of the trail. Anyhow, it was nice to hear other people be impressed by my minimally armored, no lift truck. I didnt get out without some new scratches and a serious dent to my passenger bedside. I managed to squeeze between rocks and trees with maybe an inch to spare on either side, only to run over a log and have a branch twist up and catch my bed :annoyed:. I wouldn't recommend anyone go out there without sliders and a lift. If I knew what I was getting into I wouldn't have even gone. It was a fun adventure, and I guess I can say I made it to part of the continental divide trail. Time for some new bedsides though, I want to go fiberglass but after today I want to keep my truck nice and thin. I'll try draw out on google maps what trails I took, but pipestone is miserable for full size vehicles. Thanks for reading my long rambling post:)

I went to ringing rocks last year and that was pretty cool, but yeah I'm thinking it's time for some glass. I'm hesitant about adding width, but I had no business on that kind of trail anyway. Just pisses me of I could squeeze through everything and it was a freaking pop up branch that did me in.

man that seriously sucks about the bedside! especially since you were almost home free (so to speak) and then got caught with a branch. If you want my opinion on replacement options, i would consider what kind of stuff you want to do with the truck in the future. if more trails like this are in your future... then i'd look at a stock-style bedside. glass is awesome but the people that i've talked to who have it have said it's awesome visually and for baja style stuff... but they werent sure if they'd do it again given the added width. that said, Fiberglass is great for what it is so if you really want to go that direction you should. take me with a grain of salt as I havent run glass personally. I'm just going off what i've heard from friends of mine.

on a seperate note, I'm driving out to Bozeman on Wednesday from Seattle. should be a pretty easy drive as it's a straight shot on I-90, but is there anything i ought to know about within the Montana section? i'm talking construction, bad/sketchy portions of highway, etc.

Long term, I'd like to sas and put a 14bolt in the rear, but that's a looong time out. Realistically I'm aiming for a jack of all trades build aiming for 35s. I mainly just do normal fire service roads, but want to get into rock crawling. I honestly had no business on a trail that thin. Should've had signs for no full sizes, I was just too dumb to turn around. I just like the idea of no rust, lighter, easier fitment of bigger tires, and the looks sure dont hurt either. Down the road, full size axles will be wide anyway, so the glass could match. I think if I'm going to do more stuff like today, investing in an ATV might be a better option lol. Well, that or get a nice small beater 1st gen :D

first gens are great! would highly recommend (as i'm sure many more would, just head over to the "What have you done to your first gen today" thread if you don't believe me:rofl:). not that i'm biased of course;)! in all seriousness though, if you're looking for a trail rig, a basic, high mileage, first gen is a great place to start. they are damn tough, and they last so long (when maintained) that you can usually buy a higher mileage one without too much worry.

Yeah, once I graduate college I'll start looking for a second vehicle and it will very likely be a 1st gen. I'm afraid to mess with my truck too much as I dont have a backup vehicle, but a cheap 1st gen would fill that role very well. Who knows, if a really cheap beater shows up in ok condition theres a small chance I'd jump on it in the next year or so.

So going back and looking on the On-X app, I started on halfway creek road, kept left on 8632, turned on a trail not on the map, ended up on 412 right on the lake, then followed it all the way to about 48.00885, -112.39978. Coming back, the map says fs412 is where the private property signs were, so I had to take a my best guess trail to get right to the end of 412 where the gate was, about 1 minute from "Delmoe Lake" Road? Definately would not recommend :bananadead:

Arrived in Bozeman last night. Looking forward to getting settled in, then exploring and seeing what Montana has to offer... besides lower gas prices than WA:D. the drive over was beautiful

I dont usually spend much time in town but keep an eye out for a white 1st gen with a TW sticker in the window and lots of moose stickers too.

you'll see more without beer goggles.
