Awesome find! Spent most of my Sunday watching this channel. Looks like I need to up my game when it comes to recklessly dangerous mine exploration. I lose my nerve about 5 feet after losing sight of daylight, every single time!

 

Fair point. And certainly, secrecy is probably the most effective immediate solution to this problem, but it's not one I can 100% agree with.

Crowds are an inevitable consequence of the growth of human population and improving quality of life. I think other people have the same rights to experience the natural world as I do.

It's the reckless and illegal actions of a handful of the visitors, a few destructive ass-holes, which so severely damage our public lands.

I can't argue against the statistical fact that more people overall will mean more more destructive ass holes, on average. And that sucks.

But if all the respectful, law-abiding people were suddenly silenced online, or even worse, posted all their awesome photos under this overtly elitist guise of secrecy... then the next generation of backcountry explorers will just learn everything from the destructive ass holes instead, including how to treat our lands.

So I think there's a line to walk here. Discretion is key, but secrecy alone will eventually backfire in the age of social media.

Great point! It's a terrible idea to include gps tags on social media posts. Well except for maybe emergencies, in which case... why would you go on social media in an emergency??!?

But for all readers: I strongly recommend that you disable gps tagging on all your camera devices, immediately and at all other times. This might seem convenient, but it is truly alarming what the app companies and malware perpetrators can obtain from the geotags on your photos alone these days. Not to mention the facial recognition and 24/7 eavesdropping, but that's a different story.

In my above argument, I was talking about the practice of carefully sharing limited but nonzero information with other aspiring outdoorspeople on this forum, as exemplified on the many trip reports that I love reading and, on occasion, contributing here.

GPS tags are for robots, exploitative social media companies, and oppressive communist regimes. Do not use them!

I don't think anyone is saying people don't have a right to see these places. But part of what makes them so incredible is that they DO take work to get to, whether via a tough 4x4 trail or lots and lots of research. Even if every visitor is respectful/law abiding, that increased traffic does erode those resources at a higher rate.

 

Do as you please. I have a hard time not bragging about the great spots I've found. I wish I would have kept my mouth shut a few times. Mostly when I should have kept my mouth shut is with hiking trails to some good fishing spots.

 

I guess you can find all the mining sites now that Gaia has a layer that supports them.
