If the midland you linked for $150 already comes with an antenna, is the NMO mount and extra antenna just for extended range but not 100% required?

Yeah the one it comes with is about 6" long. Which may seem like a lot but trust me it doesn't really get the job done.

Where is a good place to look for antenna mounts and antennas? I'd probably want a stubby antenna and mount it to my roof rack...

Are they like CB antennas, the higher up the better the reception is?

Id say so. I opted for a larger antenna just to get a little higher gain out of the radio.

Yep. As @jlemmond said, get a longer antenna too. I use that small antenna around town and keep a longer one behind the passenger seat for when I actually plan to use the radio at any distance.

 

Cool. Meant to ask, you said your antenna was 6db, why did you go with one that had such high gain?

 

On second thought Matt, that mount looks like it has to screw in. I would get one that clamps on instead, I use this one, its adjustable in all directions, but a little more spendy than the one you linked.
