Cold cranking amps

My owners handbook does not list CCA (cold cranking amps) for my stock 2000 Tacoma 2.4L , 2 wheel drive , stick shift.

The vehicle will never see freezing weather so I’m just interested in a basic battery.

Anyone know the minimum CCA for a replacement 24F battery. Thanks.

 

You will be fine with whatever Automotive 24f battery you put in there. If you were starting a hot v8 it would be a different story.

A cheap alternative is a reconditioned battery from a wholesaler. I get recon batteries at cost through my shop, they are usually $40 with a core

 

Quality matters. My experience has been the cheap Walmart (or whomever) batteries don't tend to last that long. I was only go with Interstate and lately I've moved to AGM type batteries.

To put in perspective I had 6+ year old Interstate battery with a dead cell and it still started the truck. AGM batteries are Absorbed Glass Mat batteries, the same technology as Optima.

I can by a value based product at Walmart for $55; however, I'm pretty sure I will need to pull it in 12-18 months and bring it back. At 13 months it's not a free replacement and it starts getting prorated if your lucky. Or you can get non-Optima AGM batteries at Pep Boys for about $150 online and pick up today and not have to touch it for 5 years.

In the end I spend more time and money with cheap batteries then spending it upfront on a good one.

 

I guess I will have to update here in 5 or 6 years on how my Walmart AGM battery is doing.

I could also post about how the Panasonic that was fine but I pulled out of my 4Runner to use as a solar battery for my sheds is doing.

Interstate is getting sued hard for polluting South LA for lead contamination over the years.

 

I live 20 miles From East Penn Manufacturing so I have been running seconds for 25 years now with no problem.

Since only 3 companies last I really looked produced batteries in the USA Walmart or any of the Big Box Auto Parts stores works even more so if your battery dies 1000 miles from home.

Funny my Interstate Battery salesman said AGM batteries were a waste of money in this market area they don`t bother to even stock them he would be glad to sell me one .

Since I kill batteries if I get 12 months I am happy .

 

I have an Advance Auto Gold in it now. 7 1/2 years old, but I noticed it went from holding 12.65 V to 12.34 V recently. I checked with my hydrometer and it has one weak cell. I lived in cold country when i bought it but now that I’m out of the winter I figured I go with something less.

I have read that manufacturers add more plates to increase CCA’s and that is possibly bad in hot climates. Something about more plates in the same size case so they’re closer together and more prone to heat damage.

I just might experiment with the 585 CCA $55. Walmart and make sure I keep my battery jumper charged up and in the tool box.

 

Yea, I had an 88 Honda CRX with Panasonic battery and it was probably the best battery ever. I don't think I changed it until 1995.

I haven't seen that lawsuit but I do know that they were getting sued over their pro-rating and returns. But generally speaking anything that taste good or is works well is bad for your or the environment. All these guys are scum, some do it here (versus China or Mexico) and some get caught. I haven't seen green batteries and Wholefoods yet, so this is what we got.

Pollution, recycling and materials handling is a real problem with lead acid batteries. Batteries in general are problematic because everyone wants power on the go. It will be a thing in 20 years from now.

 

I have had good luck with acdelco, got 6 good years out of my last two. Although, idk if it really matters all that much. I bought Walmart this last time because it was easy. And cheap. If I get 2-3 years, I'd say I got my money's worth.

 

I think that part of the reason I got 7 1/2 years ( it still shows no signs of starting weakness only that I check my batteries regularly and found one weak cell ) before even getting one weak cell is that years ago I mounted a small harbor freight solar charger on my tool box wired directly to the battery. The truck sits sometimes for days and the charger has just enough milliamps to keep it fully charged.

 

I'm closing in on 6 years on my Walmart 24F battery in my 00 Tacoma.
Until last October I lived at over 9000 feet above sea level(Dillon CO), winter temp as low as -25 and times when the highs were negative 0's or single digits for a week +.
Now living in Desert(Grand Junction CO) 14 days over 100 so far this summer and an average of 55 days over 90 degrees

Walmart 24F is still going strong and hasn't required a jumpstart yet. This battery proves that not everything from Walmart is junk.

 

OK. I'm might be eating my words here, but figured I would share. He doesn't talk about longevity though.

 

I never asked about longevity since the truck is 20 years old and I’m a hell of a lot older than that.....2-3 years into the future works for me ; )

Also I carry a lithium battery jumper.
